Why is the AP poll (media) even still a thing

Basically comes out on Sunday and influences the Tuesday vote.

Don't like the head start they give certain programs every August. It's like giving a marathon runner a four mile lead to begin the race. Let the committee begin the rankings after four or five games.

Exactly right. If the mantra of “last year’s performance doesn’t matter” is true, then ratings shouldn’t even come out until the CFPC rated them for the first time. Clearly this past week showed that letting the games play out makes far more sense.

I disagree about the AP influencing the CFP poll. In 2015 we were 3rd in the AP and 5th in the Coaches poll the week that the first CFP poll came out. The committee had us ranked #1 in that poll.

This past week Ohio State was #3 and the committee had them at #1. I just don't see much evidence to suggest that the AP impacts the CFP at all.
