Why does everyone have to make a "statement"?

Jun 3, 2020, 10:18 AM

Every sports team and school and league, all kinds of companies, even my company issued a "message" from the CEO.

Why? What is the point?

I’m not sure you will ever get it, if you ask such a question.

Yes. And I don't mean for that to sound so cynical.

Jun 3, 2020, 11:00 AM

It's very possible that the leader of the organization feels that way. It's possible that the leader is considering the positive impact of such statements. But the obligation to make such a comment is specifically the PR obligation of an organization's leadership to mitigate the opportunity for damage to the brand, fair or not.

words with a very obvious message that almost everyone on earth would agree with. I don't get the point.

It's the same as people who did a social media blackout. In some cases it's virtue signalling, but in most cases it's a well intentioned effort to recognize what's going on and not just continue posting pictures of dogs and tacos as if the country isn't on fire.

Most of the "statements" I'm seeing on Twitter

are just followed by people replying how insufficient the "statement" was. There's actually a guy who has a spreadsheet "ranking" all the MLB teams' "statements". The Braves got a 3 out of 8. Awesome.

The whole thing seems very shallow. I guess they are just doing it because they think the people want it. I'd like to know why people want it, but no one so far has been able to provide such an answer.

Here's a statement from Walmart:

Jun 3, 2020, 11:17 AM

“We must remain vigilant in standing together against racism and discrimination. Doing so is not only at the heart of the values of our company, it’s at the core of the most basic principles of human rights, dignity and justice.”

Why is that so hard to understand?

Is understanding what you are really after?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe you misunderstood my question.

Jun 3, 2020, 11:20 AM

If so, that's my fault, and I apologize. I can comprehend the text of the statements I'm reading. It's not an issue of me not understanding what the companies are saying.

My question is about what the purpose of the statements is. Like, I know Wal-Mart wants to stand against racism. We almost all do. But why does (seemingly) everyone feel the need to release a statement saying it?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was a statement to their employees. The obviously want

Jun 3, 2020, 11:30 AM

them to know that they stand with them and support them and the protesters rights to peacefully protest in the name of racial equality and justice.

Two men outside of Savannah chased a black jogger down and murdered him in broad daylight on camera. About a week after that discovery, several white cops put their knees on a black man's neck and back and murdered him in broad daylight and on camera. These things are not the first time these things have happened, as you well know.

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” — Dr Martin Luther King Jr

“To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.” — Ella Wheeler Wilcox

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” — Archbishop Desmond Tutu

“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.” — Dr Martin Luther King Jr

It is obvious and self explanatory.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In a way, I guess I can use a personal example.

Jun 3, 2020, 11:23 AM [ in reply to Here's a statement from Walmart: ]

Earlier in the week, I made a post that said something about President Trump (I can't even remember what it was about). Someone replied to me criticizing me for not having something negative to say about all the violence happening. I just thought it would be assumed that I was against violence, and didn't think about making a post saying such.

Like, I am glad to assume the Atlanta Braves and Wal-Mart are against racism and violence. I'd like to think most people would assume that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Multiple people have talked about the statements

benefiting their employees. I had not even considered this. So, I am learning. Keep 'em coming.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why should they remain silent?

Jun 3, 2020, 11:42 AM

Perhaps that is the better question.
