ACC notes

Feb 22, 2019, 4:30 PM

Below are a few ACC points of interest we hope you’ll find helpful in your coverage this weekend.

ACC
• The ACC has won the most national titles of any conference (six) in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball since 2015. The next closest is the SEC with four. The ACC is the only conference to win each of the four titles over that stretch.

• In addition, the ACC's six major national titles have come from five different programs – Clemson football (2016, 2018), Notre Dame women’s basketball (2018), North Carolina men’s basketball (2017), Duke men’s basketball (2015), Virginia baseball (2015).

• The ACC has won more football national titles than any other conference since 2013 (three of the last six) and more men’s basketball national championships than any other league since 2015 (two of the last four).

• In the fall standings of the Learfield Directors’ Cup, the ACC leads all conferences with four teams in the top 10, and eight teams in the top 20. Wake Forest leads the way at No. 6, followed by No. 7 Duke, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 10 NC State, No. 14 Virginia, No. 15 North Carolina, No. 17 Florida State and No. 19 Syracuse.

Men’s Basketball
• Six ACC teams are ranked in the AP Top 25, including No. 1 Duke, No. 3 Virginia, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 16 Florida State, No. 18 Louisville and No. 20 Virginia Tech. The ACC is tied for the most teams in the poll and no other conference has three teams in the top 10.

• The ACC has had at least one team ranked in the AP poll for 1,009 consecutive weeks dating back to December 19, 1962 (when it was a top-10 only poll).

• No. 8 North Carolina’s road win at top-ranked Duke on Wednesday night left three teams – the Tar Heels, Blue Devils and Virginia – tied for the top spot in the ACC regular-season standings at 11-2 with five games remaining in the regular season.

• Five ACC teams – Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia Tech – have reached the 20-win mark for the 2018-19 season, and NC State’s overtime win over Boston College on Wednesday night marked the Wolfpack’s 19th of the year.

• Virginia has tied an ACC record (set previously by five other teams) with four road wins over an AP Top 25 team. The Cavaliers have victories at No. 23 Maryland on Nov. 28; at No. 23 NC State on Jan. 29; at No. 8 UNC on Feb. 11 and at No. 20 Virginia Tech on Feb. 18. Virginia travels to No. 18 Louisville on Saturday.

Women's Basketball
• Six ACC teams are ranked in both the AP and USA Today/Coaches polls, the most of any league. Louisville leads the league at No. 4 in both polls, followed by No. 5/4 Notre Dame, No. 9/12 NC State, No. 14/14 Miami, No. 18/18 Syracuse and No. 22/20 Florida State.

• The ACC enters the week with the No. 1 RPI in the nation. Six ACC teams are in the top 20 of the RPI through games played on Feb. 18, including Notre Dame (1), Louisville (3), NC State (11), Syracuse (12), Miami (17) and Florida State (20).

• In Charlie Creme’s latest Bracketology (Feb. 18), eight ACC teams are predicted to earn bids to the 2019 NCAA Championship – Louisville and Florida State in Chicago; NC State and Clemson in Portland; Notre Dame and Syracuse in Albany; and Miami and North Carolina in Greensboro.

• The ACC owns 160 non-conference wins, the most of any league, and the third best non-conference winning percentage (.796). The ACC has 15 teams with double-digit win totals, the most of any league.

Baseball
• ACC teams are off to a combined 38-15 start against non-league opposition and remain well-represented in the six major national polls following opening weekend. North Carolina remains ranked as high as No. 5 (Baseball America), Florida State No. 6 (Baseball America), Louisville No. 8 (USA Today Coaches, D1 Baseball), Clemson No. 14 (Baseball America), Georgia Tech No. 19 (Collegiate Baseball), Duke No. 20 (Collegiate Baseball), Wake Forest No. 20 (D1 Baseball), NC State No. 21 (Perfect Game) and Miami No. 30 (Collegiate Baseball).

• The upcoming weekend schedule finds several ACC teams battling nationally-ranked opponents. After forging a 4-0 start under first-year head coach Gino DiMare, Miami hits the road to face No. 3 Florida. Georgia Tech plays host to No. 7 UCLA, while No. 23 NC State will play at No. 22 Coastal Carolina.

• Clemson leads the ACC and ranks second in the NCAA with its 10 home runs in four games (2.25 per game).

• Duke pitchers lead the nation with 15.68 strikeouts per nine innings (63 Ks through 36 innings thus far).

Fencing
• The 15th ACC Fencing Championship gets underway this Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at Conte Forum on the campus of Boston College. The men’s and women’s individual finals and team competitions of the championship will be streamed live by ACC Network Extra.

• The ACC Fencing Championship features two of the top 10-ranked fencing teams in the nation in Notre Dame and Duke. In the CollegeFencing360.com Top 10 poll, the Irish are No. 1 in the both the men's and women's rankings, while Duke is No. 6 in both and North Carolina and Boston College are receiving votes.

Men's Lacrosse
• All five ACC men’s lacrosse teams are ranked in both the Inside Lacrosse and USILA Top 20 polls, including No. 5/5 Duke, No. 8/6 Notre Dame, No. 12/12 Virginia, No. 14/10 North Carolina and No. 17/20 Syracuse. The ACC is the only conference with all of its schools in the top 20.

Women's Lacrosse
• Six ACC women’s lacrosse teams are ranked in the Inside Lacrosse Top 20 poll. Boston College is No. 1, followed by No. 2 North Carolina, No. 7 Syracuse, No. 11 Virginia, No. 15 Duke and No. 20 Duke.

• Boston College is No. 1 in the Nike/US Lacrosse rankings, followed by No. 3 North Carolina, No. 8 Syracuse, No. 13 Virginia, No. 14 Notre Dame and No. 18 Duke.

Softball
• Defending national champion Florida State is ranked No. 1 in all three polls – NFCA, Softball America, and ESPN.com/USA Softball. North Carolina is No. 24 in the Softball America poll, while Notre Dame is receiving votes in the NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls.

Swimming & Diving
• Seven ACC men’s squads, which equals the most of any league, are ranked in the latest CSCAA Poll, including No. 5 NC State, No. 8 Louisville, No. 14 Virginia, No. 19 Georgia Tech, No. 21 Virginia Tech, No. 22 Florida State and No. 23 Notre Dame.

• Six ACC women’s teams are ranked in the most recent CSCAA Poll, including No. 4 NC State, No. 5 Virginia, No. 12 Duke, No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 19 Louisville and No. 21 North Carolina.

• The ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship will conclude Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Track and Field
• Virginia Tech is serving as host of the 2019 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which concludes Saturday, Feb. 23, at Rector Field House.

• Florida State’s men hold the No. 9 spot in the latest USTFCCCA rankings to lead all ACC teams. The FSU women are also tops among league teams at No. 11. The Virginia Tech women are ranked 20th, followed by Miami at No. 27.

• ACC student-athletes hold 30 spots among the nation’s top 10 in their respective events.

Tennis
• Nine ACC women's teams, including an NCAA-best seven in the top 25, are ranked in the most recent Oracle/ITA Rankings. North Carolina is No. 2, followed by No. 3 Duke, No. 12 Florida State, No. 14 Virginia, No. 18 Miami, No. 23 NC State, No. 25 Syracuse, No. 31 Georgia Tech, No. 33 Wake Forest and No. 36 Boston College.

• Nine ACC men's squads are ranked in the latest Oracle/ITA Top 50 Rankings, including reigning national champion and No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 4 Virginia, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 19 Florida State, No. 29 NC State, No. 35 Miami, No. 44 Louisville and No. 50 Duke.

Wrestling
• The ACC regular-season championship will be decided this weekend. NC State, Virginia Tech and North Carolina enter their final matches of the regular season tied atop the league standings with 3-1 league marks. NC State travels to Virginia Tech on Friday night, and the winner of that match is assured of at least a share of the championship. UNC could tie the Wolfpack or Hokies with a win over Duke, but a loss by the Tar Heels would leave the NC State-Virginia Tech winner with the outright title.

• NC State remains No. 10 in this week’s NCWA rankings to lead five ACC teams among the top 25. The Wolfpack is followed by No. 13 North Carolina, No. 14 Virginia Tech, No. 15 Pitt and No. 23 Virginia.
