extreme disservice and are very wrong and short-sighted. If John C. Calhoun did own slaves back in that time of our history, which he apparently did, this was an integral practice which was universally accepted at that time in our nation's history. It can never be excised or forgotten! History happened whether we like it or not! This example, as well as innumerable others throughout our history, should never be forgotten. As we reflect on our nation's past history in terms of bringing it forward to this time in history we now are living, we can fully recognize the past faults of our nation's history by now coming together in all unity to affect very positive changes to make "Equality for All" a most effective reality, not only for our generation, but for generations yet to come. So let us be thankful for all those who in our history have gone before us for it is by and through their examples we have learned and evolved to make improvements for all of humanity to live by for now and on into the future! So Watson and Hopkins should be greatful for the whole history of Clemson - for it is that history which has continued on to propel them into the successes they are enjoying today!

They don't want it forgotten. They want history known. They don't want them honored.

Slave history is a part of every nation on this earth. It was based on greed not racism. Was it right? No. But America is the land of the free for everyone. No one is under oppression in this country anymore. The government handout that started 50 years ago has hurt the black community more than anything. Look up Shelby Steele and his interviews. He is spot on with the issues. https://www.brightworkresearch.com/criticalthinking/2017/07/african-slaves-come-form-go/To understand African slavery it is necessary to know where the slaves came from and where they went, as well as the numbers that were taken.

Who is trying to erase history? History will still be taught. They just don't want to honor certain people with statues or buildings named after them. History will stay the same though.

History is NOT being taught as it was before about 1965 or so==LBJ made sure the Great Society concept got a start and it was not kind for the African-American families that were struggling. I suspect since they are tearing down the Rob't. E. Lee statutes in the Commonwealth of VA, along with others, that they might wish to look into the defamation of U. Grant. History says he and his family had slaves in the Midwest and did not follow Lincoln's edict until after Lee had freed his slaves--post Appomattox. Nuk and his colleagues might wish to check that out. We should learn from history--not try to erase it.

From Germany’s playbook, make slavery, and the genocide of the native Americans a required course. Not just something you gloss over. On top of that they outlawed holocaust denial groups. Queue the “this is Murica” speak

They did... read a book. A large portion of early European settlers that came here were slaves.
A couple other rid bits for ya: America didn’t invent slavery. The African slaves that were shipped to the US were already slaves and sold by other Africans. Slavery still exists today.
These are not meant to be excuses... just facts.

Indentured servitude was for a defined period of time I believe. They just had to pay their debt and were free later. Poor people often used it to get to America. That's how they paid their debt for the expensive trip over. There was a time that close to half of the European immigrants in the original 13 colonies were indentured servants paying off their debt with "free labor".

Blah Blah Blah. How about not naming the Hall of our beloved University after slave owner and slavery defender?

John 8:7 "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Bottom line here is none of us should be remembered for our sins. We should only be remembered by the very positive things we were able to accomplish during the course of our lifetimes. Calhoun and Clemson were justifiably remembered and honored for the very positive things they accomplished during their lifetimes. Neither Watson nor Hopkins have any right to dictate that they should not be so honored!!!!

He “apparently” owned slaves huh?
I’ll probably catch flak for this, but what was Clemson football before DW4? A middling 9-3 or 10-2 football team? Right there on the verge of greatness but couldn’t quite grab it. During DW4s college career applicants and attendance at Clemson skyrocketed. Why? Partly because DW4 and others thrust little ole Clemson into the spotlight and were winning us championships, and taking us to heights we’ve never been before. At the same time bringing in millions of dollars to Clemson. So the very least we could do is consider changing the name of Tillman hall back to its original name. Is that too much?

Most everybody that visits Rome, they want to see the Roman Colosseum where Gladiators faught to their death. They have their pictures taken there and brag about being there when they get back home, and the coliseum was built from 100% slave labor from sun up to sun down and were killed if they didn't work hard enough. And nobody has a problem with that!!! Or do some of you feel that it should be renamed?
Maybe we should name the world Shameful, bc about everything that was built prior to the 17th centry, it was built mostly by slave labor!!!
