Interesting Parallel in Basketball

Mar 10, 2013, 10:12 PM

Both Brownell and Umo in 3rd year as head Bball coaches at Clemson.

Both finished 5-13 in conference play and suffered embarrassing losses along the way.

Both had depleted rosters and injuries galore.

Brownell took over a program experiencing unprecedented success and Umo took over a program in shambles.

Umo gets fired. I would say Mr. Brownell is on a short leash.

This was my main point to some degree tonight. In fact

Coach Coleman's team was showing signs of improvement. I think both deserve longer to be honest. 3 years in basketball is nothing. A coach should have 4 or 5 years to show their progress.

Three is a joke.

Agree...

although it was a different circumstance - I bet Indiana is glad they didn't ditch Tom Crean after 3 years of misery.

My post is not a "fire Brownell" post, rather

Our new AD may have an itchy trigger finger. I think Brownell should get another year, and if improvement is shown 2-3 more.

Unless his opinion is that it's not going to get better

In which case, one should pull the trigger sooner to get the next phase underway.

Re If he improves, give him one yr. extensions. This two

and three year stuff is costing us a plenty. Improving is what you are being paid to do, anything else is a bonus. If they don't like it, let them hit the road.

recruits well ?

style of play attractive?

wins close games?

fills the stands?

what is this x and o stuff i always read about....pls don't confuse him w/ Chad Morris or some offensive genius....

average coach at best

if fired, he WOULD NOT get another upper tier coaching job anytime soon

what are we holding onto?

The difference

Mar 10, 2013, 10:38 PM

"unprecedented success" is a stretch

Brownell proved in his first year he's capable of getting results. He won a NCAA tournament game with less than Purnell did with his 3 attempts.

Brownell's current problems are a result of the coaching transition.

Wasn't that a play in game or something like that in the tournament.

Brownell's future probably rests in the hands of

Mar 10, 2013, 10:50 PM

Blossomgame
Sullivan
Coleman

Three guys that will probably make or break the team next year. Sullivan was a four star (i think) and Blossomgame was hyped pretty hard before the injury. Coleman was a solid player from what i recall.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Coleman's team was in a much greater state of disarray

Mar 10, 2013, 11:39 PM

Heck, they only had 7 players on scholarship. At least Brownell's team isn't just giving up.
