So, will ESPN, ABC, Fox, et al, have to pay each athlete

Oct 30, 2019, 10:11 AM

that is shown in a video clip of a game, starting in 2021? This thing will be very hard to manage, and that's putting it mildly.

Enjoy the next couple years of college football, they may be the last we will ever see, of the sport as we now know it. Anyone who thinks differently is burying their head in the sand. This thing could make Pandora's Box look like a plain old shipping crate.

No, there will be one of two things that happen IMO

1. The NCAA will have each athlete give them consent to being on TV and then the NCAA gives those networks permission to include the players on their telecast.

Or

2. There will be a players association, similar to the NFLPA that will provide consent on behalf of their members.

And on and on and on. The people passing these laws have no idea what the actual effect of this will be. Neither do I. But, one thing I am sure of. Schools with big money boosters will profit most from this. And in that pond, Clemson is a very small fish, if we are even in the pond at all. We may only be in the kiddee pool.

In a worst case scenario, you are right and the biggest schools rule the sports world.

However, there are many scenarios to avoid the free-for-all.

People keep talking about big money boosters and car

dealerships offering a recruit hundreds of thousands. But at the end of the day there has to be an ROI. If a car dealership that is owned by a booster gives a couple of kids $100k to shoot some TV ads and it doesn't help them sell any more cars, and the team isn't winning championships, then that money will dry up. Also, I think you underestimate what Clemson alumni and boosters can do.

It is going to be an interesting couple of years after college sports transitions to this system, but eventually things will be normalized.

Every player will consent to being on TV as part of their scholarship. I'm not any type of legal expert, but the NFL players don't get paid for their appearances on TV. The appearance on television is what makes their name, image, and likeness valuable.

For every Trevor Lawrence getting paid $100,000 for a national add, there will be 10 Logan Rudolph's getting paid $5,000-10,000 for a local Roto Rooter commercial, and there will be dozen's more making $500-1000 to do a Sue's Wings and Things commercial. Mellow Mushroom will pay the offensive line $10,000 as a unit to show up on a Tuesday in February to eat a bunch of pizza and sign some autographs and that will happen at 90% of the power 5 Schools. Transcendent players will have national appeal regardless of who they play for.

College football today looks nothing like it did in 1999. In 2039 it will look completely different again and players getting money above board instead of under the table will only be a small portion of what has changed.
