Simple Solution to Playoff Mess

Oct 18, 2015, 5:35 PM

We could be in a mess later this year even if we go undefeated. I still think if undefeated we go buy who knows. My solution to all this. Expand to 8 teams..........Goes like this.

Power 5 Conference Champions (5 bids)
2 highest rated power five teams after champions (2 bids)
Top rated "non power five" team. (Maybe a Memphis, Boise St some years, etc)

You get representation among all conference types.

In most years the #1 overall seed would play the #8 seed which woudl be your Memphis, Boise St, etc. #1 would not have to play a SEC, Pac 12, etc.

Thoughts?

Not that I personally care, but where does Notre Dame fit? You know that would be a consideration.

ND would have a chance at an at large berth. One other caveat

No more than two teams from any conference, no matter where they are ranked. Too much SEC bias would make it too likely to have 3 SEC teams ranked in top 8.

Sorry.....ND would be part of the two eligible at large bids.

They need to join acc though

Let the next six weeks play out?

I've been wrong two times, but this isn't one of them.

It can play out, but with just 4 teams, one conference is

left out each year, and that is a very subjective decision by the committee. I would much rather have the committee deciding who should be 6th, 7th and 8th, rather than deciding who is 3rd or 4th.

Would be a huge improvement over what we have.

The current 4-team playoff is a step in the right direction, and a big improvement over the BCS, but still has serious flaws. Some day we will have a playoff that automatically includes conference champions, and folks will laugh and scratch their heads when they think about how it was all subjective back in the day.

Pretty good plan, there is no great solution. The sec will naturally complain that they have 4 teams better than x conference every year.

You could expand to 6 with 2 auto-byes - ie. Bama & Oregon last year

But I agree, current system is better than it was

Why not do what the division II, III, etc do. That is a real playoff system. Not hard at all.
