Robert Griffin III

Jun 1, 2012, 9:05 AM

Serious question but flame away if you think you have to.

Why does he have to call himself Robert Griffin III instead of just Robert Griffin? I'm sure there are countless other players in the NFL who are "Junior" or "II" or "III" but they don't call themselves that.

He's a grown man playing in the NFL - seems like he would drop the "III" from his name - seems kind of pompous to me.

Now, I can understand, for example, why Davis Love III the pro golfer calls himself "III" because his father, Davis Love, Jr, was a famous golf teacher and was well-known in the pro golf world - I can see not wanting to cause confusion between the two of them.

Branding

The same reason Michael J. Fox always uses the J. - it makes him stand out. Both Robert and Griffin are relatively common, unremarkable names. the III makes him just a little more noticeable.

That's a good point but......

I've heard Michael J. Fox has to use the J because there was already a Michael Fox registered with the Screen Actors Guild (the actors union).

Yes, but he was just one example. Vivica A. Fox, Mary J. Blige, Robert Downey Jr. are others...not to mention all the celebrities who still use their middle name.

There was another Robert Griffin on Baylor football team which is why he went with the "III" . It caught on with media and makes hims $$$ now so why change.

Re: Re: Robert Griffin III

Robert T. Griffin played offensive guard for Baylor last season and was drafted in the 6th round by the NY Jets. If there were two Mike Williams' on a team there would need to be a way to distinguish them and so with RGIII the "third" part of his name just caught on and now it's a money maker because Washington can sell all kinds of "RG3" gear.

I'm a third too and rarely ever use it unless I'm signing a check or something.

Whatever you say buddy.... I heard a story abou it on ESPN during the draft and I Wikipedia'd it so I wouldn't look dumb. It took less time to look that up than it did to post this stupid response to your comment.
