Robbie Caldwell as a Recruiter

Sep 28, 2017, 11:30 PM

From what I see and have read, Robbie Caldwell seems to be one of the better OL coaches in the Southeast. However I don't have a lot of data to back that up other than what I've read.

How does he do as a recruiter? Does he connect well with the top OL recruits we are after these days like Salyer and Carman? He seems ol' fashioned and country style - which may not universally appeal to a guy like Carman for instance.

Plus I get the idea other programs counter is in OL recruiting by quoting our track record of OL's in the NFL.

Thoughts and opinions or data on this?

Every player I have heard to comment on him seems to really like him, as well as his coaching style. And considering the upswing on talent over the last several years, his draft classes will only get better. I feel several guys on our line will play on Sunday, with Hyatt going in the first few rounds for sure imo.

when you have the success we have had the last 5+ years......I don't question anything about our program. Simple

the only strike on Caldwell isn't his fault. he's a great coach who loves what he does, his players like him and recruits like him but recruiting is a nasty game and other schools go straight to his age. I believe this staff recruits guys to Clemson for the opportunity to play at Clemson & not for who their position coach will be though. with some players I'm sure that's a factor but I bet the percentage of players that have the same coach at their position for their entire career at a school is smaller than those who don't

Do you have any articles or references on that? Teams going at his age?

I think the biggest negative that opposing coaches use against Clemson regarding Caldwell is that he will probably retire soon.

The answer is no.

He's not a good recruiter

I never knew he recruited BV's get-back coach. That's good enough for me. He actually recruited him twice... once at Vandy, and once at Clemson
