WHY, WHY, WHY, can`t we ever get these top O/L???? we can get plenty of W/R`s and other small guys but the guys we need to be competitive O/L and D/L just can not get..we do a little better on D/L but our O/L recruiting is just plain pitiful...IMHO this is our and Dabo`s biggest failure!!!!!!!

Interesting that Rich Rod and Joey Batson came in at the same time, and the OLine went downhill at the same time. I'm an anti-Batson guy, but maybe some of the Blame that has been placed on him actually resides with RichRod. Still no excuse for the shape some of our current linemen are in though, IMO.

ha not arguing that at all..I think we still need to give coach caldwell longer than one year...I think we are on the right track with him. IMO if he can turn a walkon TE into a very very solid LT in less than a year then hes gonna get this turned arround.

I agree with that and am a Caldwell fan, but you gotta get at least 3 or 4 guys on campus every year if you want any semblance of depth.

Yeah we need one or two good OL in this class but we have four freshman OL in the fold one will start in 2013(Jay). So let not go crazy but yes we lack in the 2013 class in Ol and Dl at this point.

It's my belief that you need at least 3 OL in every class, because it normally takes longer to get these kids ready to start.

Remember when Tommy Bowen and Rich Rod came in. Ran all our O-Line down to 250-260 "so they could run"? We then got the tag that we did not care if our O-Line ever made it to the NFL, they were going to always be undersized. I know the father of one 4-star O-line in hs that went to Tenn. rather than Clemson because of this. He said all opposing coaches were using that against us. So we have the rep of not producing NFL lines. It is still biting us. One reason I was so opposed to re-hiring Rich Rod (among others).

Rich Rod didn't "downsize" the line...
May 23, 2012, 5:23 PM
|
|
Rich Rod didn't "downsize" the offensive line we just didn't have anyone left in 1999. Here were the OL starters in 1999:
LT 77 MATT BUTLER 6-4 296 *Sr. LG 71 COREY HULSEY 6-6 335 Jr. C 73 JASON GAMBLE 6-3 300 *Sr. RG 74 BRENT BANASIEWICZ 6-3 302 *Gr. RT 70 HOLLAND POSTELL 6-6 293 *Sr.
Four seniors and a guy that left early (Hulsey). In addition, Neely Page, whom the coaches had high hopes for, injured his back and had to quit. So, the line was smaller in 1999 because there was no one left. Kyle Young was practically the only guy in the pipeline and he immediately became the starting center. TJ Watkins was a freshman tight-end in 1998 and was moved to the line. Theo Mougros was a DL in 1998 and he was moved to guard. Neither of the two was all that big but they were instantly starters on the OL because they could fill a jersey. John McDermott, a guy who was mostly home-schooled and played very little football before he got here was suddenly a starter at OT. Here's the starters in 1999:
LT 61 AKIL SMITH 6-4 270 So. LG 73 T.J. WATKINS 6-3 252 *So. C 59 KYLE YOUNG 6-3 255 *So. RG 60 THEO MOUGROS 6-2 260 *Jr. RT 67 JOHN McDERMOTT 6-6 270 *Jr.
They were lighter than previous years but much of that was due to youth and the desperation to fill out a depth chart. It's true that Bowden and Rich Rod said they wanted mobile, quick guys on the offensive line. They also said they wanted them to be big, mobile quick guys. They just had to make due with what they had. You can ask Dabo or any other coach in the country and I'm sure they'd tell you they want the big, mobile, quick guys on the offensive line as well. Getting them has always been the problem.

They were limited yet played pretty tough, thanks to Ron West. Then when he got Dustin Fry, Roman Fry and Nathan Bennet here they did well, even as freshmen in 03.

I think we need to bring in about 4 OL in every class. Need to develop as much depth as possible. One will usually not pan out. Another will possibly get injured JK Jay. So it never hurts to recruit about 4 OL a year.

hats true but youd also like to be able to have another guy to move into center so you dont have to pull your starter out at gaurd...but thats why you recruit guys inside who can do both gaurd and center
