Q for the board. Why did gamecock recruiting hit the skids?
Nov 21, 2015, 10:01 PM

2010-2013 were great years for them. Did the gamecocks coaches just decide they didn't want to recruit hard anymore?
Those great seasons were obviously tainted because of blatant cheating which landed the gamecocks on probation. Personally, I think that once the NCAA shut down the cheating (free room-and-board at the Whitney, etc...) all of Carls Jr's recruiting advantages disappeared and their recruiting dried up.
Didn't they just get off probation last year? And do you think they'll resort to cheating again to get some 11-win rings?

Along with us changing coaching staffs and style helped them as well.

The state of South Carolina ran out of blue chip recruits that grew up gamecock fans.

former coach thought his name would bring in recruits more than coaches going out and getting to know the players

Mason Rudolph would have helped that offense a ton. He would be the best qb in the sec5

Why was it good for a few years? CTB Left
Nov 21, 2015, 10:18 PM

It was no accident that SCAR had their run when CTB left. We took the recruiting hit and they profited. Spurrier was a draw as well. But then Dabo got his coaches right, recruiting went into overdrive, and Spurrier put his foot in his mouth about retiring.
They will have bright spots in the future, but as long as we remain strong they will never be contenders for anything.

Yep , we were actually on the skids the last few years under CTB . Then , Dabo took over and was only able to sign 12 his first year . But after that it was Katie bar the door . We recruited , redshirted , and coached them up . Spurrier , meanwhile , retired several years ago .

What killed Clemson was in the trenches. We had all these skill players. And no OL/DL to speak of. And it showed, we could score points in bunches but couldn't stop anything.

Their recruiting was never great except for a few players here and there. The only difference in their recent recruiting and their recruiting then is not getting those few players here and there (shaw, and clowney)

3 reasons...
Nov 22, 2015, 12:08 AM

Ellis Johnson left, their best recruiter. Their previous oline coach, their second best recruiter. Shortage of talented Rick Hill players to buy and change their grades so they can qualify academically, over the past few years.

Mostly, Clemson recovered from our own coaching regime change and subsequent recruiting drought. Their success from '08-'13 was mostly because of key blue chip players that would normally have picked Clemson that Spurrier snagged while Dabo was still getting his feet wet.

except one. In 2008 we had the number two ranked recruiting class. If you don't keep up with recruiting, then just don't comment on it instead of stating falsehoods

around for a couple of more years. Many blue chip guys bailed out and never returned. This god's gift to cootdom saw what was coming and quit - saying if the season ever was heading south it would be time to quit. Well, he is the architect of the current coot train wreck. It's all on him.
