Phil Steele earning that ESPN paycheck:

Jun 30, 2014, 11:21 AM

"1. SEC
Was there any doubt as to which league would rank No. 1? The SEC had four teams in last year's final AP top 10, had the best nonconference record in the regular season (47-9) and also the best bowl record at 7-3 despite two BCS bowl losses. This year, the SEC has six teams that rank in my preseason top 20, led by Alabama, my No. 2 team. The SEC also has four teams in the top 11 of my plus/minus power ratings and nine teams in the top 22 of my Power Poll, which is a combination of all nine sets of my power ratings. For the ninth consecutive season, the SEC reigns supreme."

I know I'm going on the Pepsi website to get a Coke coupon but just figured I'd share.

47-9 record against the cupcake brigade, lost their BCS bowl games (including torch-bearer bama getting DRILLED by Oklahoma), and they're still the best conference in America.

smh

Since last year's performance is the bar, I'd say the ACC.

Jun 30, 2014, 11:25 AM [ in reply to Re: Phil Steele earning that ESPN paycheck: ]

2-0 in the games that mattered, with wins over Georgia, Auburn, Florida.

Oh so we just pick 2 games that "matter."

Yea that's a good way to judge a conference top to bottom.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So BCS wins only matter then the SEC wins them?

Jun 30, 2014, 11:29 AM

Because whether GT can beat Ole Miss matters, right?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The SEC is the best conference

Jun 30, 2014, 11:31 AM

Get over it.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, when the NC and OB are those 2 games! Squeaking

When you talk about quality wins you kinda make my point. There's 6-7 different teams (ala, aub, a&m, uga, florida, mizzou, scar...) you could call quality wins against in the SEC. In the ACC there is 2.

Go Georgia Southern!***

Your point illustrates why the SEC is overrated. I don't disagree that the SEC is the best conference but the only reason A&M, UGA, and Florida are quality wins is because of the media. If they don't start in the top 10 no one cares about them at the end of the season. I do think Clemson beat a quality UGA team but after injuries the team was a shell of itself.

Re: Phil Steele earning that ESPN paycheck: ACC vs SEC

Jun 30, 2014, 11:46 AM

It has always bothered me how when the ACC teams beat each other it because the conference is weak and when SEC teams beat each other it is because the conference is strong.

The media and ESPN really reinforces this nonsense. SEC may be better slightly. But these joker like the SEC is the space shuttle and the ACC is the horse and buggy. They overplay this far too much

Maybe that explains TAMU and MO's recent ascension...

Jun 30, 2014, 11:50 AM

Now they're 'SEC teams'...

What's you argument for another conference being best?

Jun 30, 2014, 1:01 PM

I hate the SEC and all the SEC talk, but it's still probably got the most elite teams. Yes, their rankings are inflated because too many of their teams start out ranked highly, but I don't think you can find 4 teams in any other conference that you could legitimately argue should be in the top 15.
