Raleigh, NC

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Woodrow Dantzler set a

school record by accounting for six touchdowns as 16th-ranked

Clemson outscored Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina

State, 45-37.

The 5-11 quarterback, who also established a record for total

yards, threw four touchdown passes and added two scores on the

ground to help the Tigers (4-1, 2-1 ACC) explode offensively for

the second straight game.

For the record, Dantzler:

- Opened the scoring with a 55-yard touchdown run in the first quarter;

- Threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Derrick Hamilton in the second to tie the game at 14-14;

- Tossed another touchdown, this time 7 yards to Ben Hall, for a 21-14 lead later in the QTR

- Found Travis Zachery open for a 22-yard touchdown for a 28-17 lead early in the third quarter;

- Scored on an 8-yard run later in the period for a 35-17 advantage;

- Threw 4 yards to Jasmin in the final minute of the third period for Clemson's final TD

In its last outing on September 29, Clemson posted a wild 47-44

overtime victory against Georgia Tech.  The Tigers are averaging

35 points per contest.

Dantzler threw TD passes of 10, seven, 22 and four yards and ran

for scores of 55 and eight yards.  He compiled 517 total yards,

the fifth-highest total in ACC history and the best mark in

school annals.

"I thought our offensive play calling kept them offbalance most

of the day," Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said. "We had some good

blocking by our offensive line and had some key catches by our

receivers.

The 517 yards surpassed his own previous record of 434 set last

season and his six TDs broke the mark of five held by Stumpy

Banks (1917) and Maxcey Welch (1930), who both did all their

scoring on the ground.

"He makes so many plays. He is just a phenemonal athlete,"

Bowden said.  "If you give him enough at-bats he'll eventually

hit the home run."

Dantzler was an efficient 23-of-27 for 333 yards without not

being picked off and carried 23 times for 184 yards, a total

that might have been greater if not for two sacks.

North Carolina State (3-2, 1-2) has dropped two of its last

three games.

Dantzler's last TD of the game came in the final minute of the

third quarter when he hit Chad Jasmin for a four-yard touchdown

that gave the Tigers a seemingly commanding 42-23 advantage. But

the Wolfpack battled back.

Philip Rivers, who had four TD passes of his own and threw for

over 300 yards, hit Bryan Peterson for a 15-yard score just over

two minutes into the final quarter.

After a 31-yard field goal by Clemson's Aaron Hunt, Rivers and

Willie Wright hooked up on a 12-yard TD with 2:57 remaining.

Rivers then found Ray Robinson for the two-point conversion.

However, that was the last time N.C. State threatened.

"We still aren't making the plays we should," North Carolina

State coach Chuck Amato said.  "We're still dropping passes.

We've got to be able to make the big plays as well as the easy

ones."

The two teams combined for 919 total yards -- 567 by Clemson --

in a game that last five minutes short of four hours.

Rivers completed 24 of his 46 pass attempts for 310 yards and

was intercepted once.  Peterson hauled in six receptions for 120

yards. the same game.

Best Is The Standard

Yeah, but Rivers had a kid...

so it wasn’t fair. He was obviously distracted by the pressures of parenthood at such an early age and unable to match Dantzler’s performance that day.

this was one of my favorite Clemson games ever

It was so fun to watch Woody shred the pack defense. We were such a scrappy little team back then. Our talent level was nowhere near where we are now. Woody was the great equalizer, he made our offense so much better. He was such a humble guy, one of my favorite tigers of all time.

Thanks for posting

White jersey with purple pants is our best road look. Wish we would wear it again
