Ohio State marching band....

I really wish we had a music major and could have a band that would do stuff like this!

BTW this is in no way a shot at Tiger Band. I know you guys work your ### off.

They go by the initials TBDITL which is The Best #### Band in The Land. I had season tickets to tOSU games for several years and they put on a great show. 90 minutes before every home game they fill up the old basketball arena (St. John) with 13,000 plus fans just to hear the pregame rehearsal. ###### Ohio is one of the best traditions in the sport.

Even most schools with music majors can't pull off a show like OSU just did. Putting together a show of that complexity in one week's time AND being able to play great music at the same time is exceedingly difficult. I don't know what their rehearsal schedule is but I imagine they probably practice every day, at least 3 hours a week. I also just read that they're an audition band, not an open-member band, so the band's the same size every year and competition to be in it is very intense.

That was a very impressive show. I was in the marching band in high school and we practiced a lot, and late at night as well. I couldn't imagine doing that in college and trying to maintain good grades. They must be exhausted!

Several factors involved in this not the least of which is enrollment.

Enrollment (Autumn 2013)

Columbus Campus Total University Total
57,466 63,964
Men
29,421 32,472
Women
28,045 31,492
Undergraduates
44,201 50,551

There is a strong commitment to the band at OSU and this year each squad leader has an iPad with the drill one it that animates each person and is an amazing teaching tool. Next year every person in the band will be issued an iPad and it will bring about a saving of thousands of dollars in printing cost for show charts.

That said I think this year's Tiger Band is doing a fantastic job and has the best sound ever. They have really picked it up a notch this year.

If you want to see a great marching band check out Western Carolina. Huge and very good.

That is really cool about the iPads.

Also I want to reiterate. I was in no way trying to attack Tiger Band I understand the forces at play that keep them from being of this caliber.

i just can't understand how anyone could get above an avg.

Oct 28, 2013, 12:50 PM [ in reply to Re: Ohio State marching band.... ]

education with a student body that large, on one campus. the student/professor(w/asst.'s) ratio has to be absurd. god forbid you have difficulty in one area of a course.

They are also all brass and percussion...

Oct 29, 2013, 12:51 AM

...so if you play a woodwind instrument (saxophone, clarinet, flute, etc) you cannot join the marching band. That's one of the reasons their sound is very powerful. It's also very difficult to make it through tryouts, although you don't have to be a music major. I attended the OSU Jazz Festival this past Spring and one of the jazz ensemble's top soloists was an engineering major. They put on a great concert.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

who has time to watch a band?

Oct 29, 2013, 2:12 AM

Too concentrated on the game. Good entertainment for the old folks at halftime!
