Offense makes me feel...
Sep 1, 2018, 10:16 PM
|
|
First, I'm not an alarmist, being negative or even too worried but,
Why is it that ever since DW4 and that motley crew left, I feel like our Offensive has generally been running at about 75% of capability. We have so much firepower but yet call so many milquetoast plays. Even if it's a productive play, it seems to to be a productive play that could have and should have been more productive.
Again, we won big and have won big since DW4 left yet it seems like we're no where near the level of excellence of those teams "overall"!?
Am I the only one who thinks this?
Go Tigers!

The whole team did great today. When was the last time the freshman continued scoring well into the 2nd half.

the play calling today was probably very deliberately vanilla.

True, but that doesn't account for 14 games last year.

To the OP.. I feel the exact same way. I'm not complaining, I'm not worried, and in fact, am pleased with where this program is. But it does often feel like that last ingredient isn't there. Is it chemistry, play calling, execution, or a mix of all? Not sure, but as effective as the O is, I look forward to seeing that IT factor.

I heard that DW changed the play at the LOS a lot.

Not sure if that’s true, but if so, it doesn’t say much for our co-OCs as play callers since their success mostly came when DW was our QB.
Regardless, I agree with you about our offense. I assumed that the playbook and production were both reduced last year due to KB not being as talented. It will be interesting to see how things go this year with TL being able to do so much.

Exactly, it just showed how knowledgable of the game and system dw was. I didn't see kb do many audibles last year. Probably because he was learning but I hope this year he is able to recognize defenses better and change the play when needed. I'm not pro kb or pro tl, I'm pro Clemson but hopefully whoever takes the majority of snaps has the knowledge and ability to do this.

I say most have answered your question and especially Judge. I would add that DW4 kinda schooled our OC’s. He had the flexibility to change the play call. Kb and the coaches admitted that last year kb wasn’t given that aka a game manager. That’s where they’re hoping he changes this year.
Dabo already admitted that they’re letting TL do that in practice. TL alluded to it in his post game presser. I’m hoping that as they get more comfortable with TL, they’ll let him run the offense more- hence will look more like what DW4 ran.
There wasn’t a series today that I didn’t think TL would not score... not true with the other qb’s.

Offensive play calling in 2017 played to our strengths. We didn't try to push the ball down the field or in the middle of the field.
2018, 1 game vs Furman is not enough to make a determination of anything.

That's 15 points we should've had. Would 63-7 have made you feel better?
If so, concentrate on those 3 drives and see what needs to be fixed.

Sir, you did not understand the general and overall context of my post. That is my fault. I apologize for not being able to articulate my point in a more clear and concise manner.

Because you don’t show all your cards against Furman

... and we played pretty much everyone on the roster.
Honestly I was more surprised at the time of possession advantage Furman had in the first half because our defense couldn’t seem to come up with “three & outs” keeping the ball away from our offense.
After watching the game today, I now agree with those who say that Trevor Lawrence needs to start sooner rather than later in order to get back to the type of offense you allude to from the Deshaun Watson era.
Once he settled into day, he looked great he will only get better.

Sir, let me spell this out for you, and others that might be a bit confused about my original post...
I am NOT just referring to today's game against Furman.
Does this help after re-reading my original post?

No, because all that matters to me is what happened today.
Everything that happened between Watson’s last game and today is immaterial.
At least that’s what I believe sir.

Be patient. It’s the first game. The coaches know what they’re doing so wait until after the first few games before we can make this opinion. DW wasn’t changing calls at all during his freshman year. It takes time for coaches to earn trust to give the ok to do that. Patience.

in Clemson history, and how we have a big fat DW4 hangover. This team is really great, program is healthy. But you don't lose DW4, Leggett, Gallman, Guillermo, A Scott, and Big Mike Williams and not notice some let down in efficiency and production on O. All that and we still made the playoff.

Think back to when our offense was most explosive. Not most balanced per se, but most likely to strike quickly. For me, it was during two memorable stretches with two electric players: Dantzler and Spiller. You could even throw in the Sammy/Nuk era. I think back to the (2011?) ACCCG vs GT. Clemson scored almost at will, and often within only a few plays. GT had long, painful drives that wore us out. Other games that posed the same problem were Scar when CJ and Ford both had long TDs early on, but we couldn’t sustain drives; Pitt - we scored at will but couldn’t stop them because the defense was tired; and so many others. Point being: what seems wasteful to the casual fan is often necessary to control the pace and impose the game plan on the opponent. Let us not forget that we were in a track meet with WV before the fumble at the goal line, and we got boat raced because we panicked and the defense couldn’t catch its breathe. So it has to work for the team. Defense has to make stops and create good field position, and offense has to sustain field position and score as often - but no necessarily as quickly - as it can. HTH

Are you saying that our offense took a slight step backwards in the 15 games we've had since the best QB we've ever had left the program?
