Run the ball

Oct 24, 2013, 11:52 AM

It's time to start getting serious about running the ball first! Stop all the long sideline passes and the deep ball in short distances. The O-line has to take over the game and as my coach uses to say-

completely, he's too dangerous not to give him some carries

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, But

Oct 24, 2013, 12:25 PM

that only works when you have the OL to accomplish that. We currently do not and will not given our current OL recruiting.

Really?

Oct 24, 2013, 12:27 PM

We have 1 different offensive lineman than we had last year. Last year we were very effective running the ball. Would you care to take another guess as to why we aren't running the ball well?

Ohh, Ohh, Meee, Meee. Call on Meeeee

Oct 24, 2013, 12:31 PM

Could it be that we had an NFL caliber back in the backfield last year, and Rod, no offense, as he is a hard working player who maximizes his ability, simply doesn't have that level of talent? The player running the ball may, in fact, have an influence on the running game.

No offense but

Oct 24, 2013, 12:35 PM

that is the smartest thing I have heard you say all day! And aside from him being NFL caliber, he could take it to the house on any play. I still think this is the biggest thing we are missing this year on offense. A defense having to respect the big play in the run game changes a lot of what the safeties and linebackers have to do on pass plays. No big play threat equals more coverage from LBs and safeties on our passes.

Re: No offense but

Is it the chicken or the egg?

I saw Rod make two moves in the Georgia game that Ellington could have never made.

I simply don't think we're making an effort to run the football, although Rod has proven that he can get 5ypc.

I won't say there isn't a talent dropoff with Ellington gone. But I think that is exacerbated by poorer interior line play and the simple fact that we don't even ATTEMPT to run the ball enough to know whether or not it's sustainable.

In the Georgia game, we made an effort to run the football and succeeded in doing so without Ellington. I like to think that's not a coincidence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rod also didn't score on either of those plays

Oct 24, 2013, 12:50 PM

which is what I am saying is the difference. If Ellington had gotten to space like that, there is a good chance he takes one to the house. Rod's long run of the season is less than 40 yards. Teams have adjusted how they play our run because Rod and Brooks haven't shown they will go the distance. UGA had not adjusted. Ellington had 2 runs in the 1st game last year longer than any Rod has made this entire year. That hurts a run game a lot.
Turn one 20 into a 70 and we all of a sudden are running or 200 yards per game again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rod can make the moves in a small space

Oct 24, 2013, 12:54 PM [ in reply to Re: No offense but ]

That's what made him a great third down back. You need five yards, get him on the outside and he will get you five. He just doesn't have that next gear, after he makes the moves to get much further down the field. Ellington is a more explosive runner. Rod will get you five, Andre will get you five, but he might also get you 55.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very well put

Oct 24, 2013, 12:57 PM

The difference is all about the big play.

O-line Coach Maybe Has To Be Re-Focused ----

Oct 24, 2013, 12:49 PM [ in reply to No offense but ]

To run the ball with authority.....got to have
have some mountain pushers on the O-line and
players that love and conditioned enough to
push those mountains.

Until we show that we have a better run game than
whats been shown...defenses are going to drop back
6, sometimes press and squeeze routes, and blitz
Boyd.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our short run game is fine

Oct 24, 2013, 12:51 PM

teams have to respect us for 5 to 10 yard carries. The safeties don't have to get involved in this.
