Need new receiver
Jul 1, 2013, 10:24 AM
|
|
i like music more than movies. No blu-ray player.
i need a new receiver for one room only and would like any suggestions that the lunge may have to offer.
There are too many new-fangled terms for smart devices etc.
I don't really want to go higher than $1000. I already have about a dozen ways to get streaming content and don't know if a receiver that does this will be a benefit or just one more way to access it.
Any thoughts from you tech geniuses? c://mydocuments/photos/helpplease.jpg

Ripped from the pages of "National Lampoon."

I bought a DVD of a collection of every issue, and it is just searchable pdf scans of the old magazines. The stereo ads are now as funny as some of the articles.

First thing I ever read in Lampoon was Pinto's First Lay. Who knew that just a few years later that the character in that short story would blow up into the now-classic Animal House.

i don't need concert hall sound

well, i can't afford concert hall sound.
i am no gamer and i am trying to figure out why in sam heel i need 6 HDMI inputs. Cable Box, DVD, Apple TV, Turntable, Ipod are the only things i have, am i missing something that i should be connecting through one of the 75 input/outputs that these things come with?
Do I need it to be Smart Compatible?

Few reasons

If you have multiple HDMI outputting devices (DVR, HTPC, PS3, XBOX, etc.), then you can output those devices to the receiver, which will take all the sound and play the sound through the speakers, and push the video to the TV through one HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV.
Smart compatible doesn't sound important for what you need, so that's not a selling feature for you.

I've got a Pioneer Elite, Harman Kardon, and Onkyo

in different parts of my house. They are all great receivers but my Pioneer Elite is my favorite.
I have a couple of questions though:
1)What kind of speakers do you have? 2)What size are said speakers?

i've got two polk bookshelf speakers. previous setup was a HTIB. So I am in the process of speaker upgrade as well.
I figured the receiver was the more important component and can add on the speakers without making Mrs. Fluffhead question the changes.
Afterall, she broke the HTIB.

IMO you could probably buy a cheaper Receiver

in the 400-500 range(maybe cheaper) and get what you are looking for.
If it were me I'd do that and start upgrading speakers. Get legit floorstanding for the front speakers, a nice center channel, and a nice subwoofer. The polk bookshelfs will work great as rear speakers(I've done that before).

If you ONLY want a receiver to listen to music then save money and get a good 2.1 sound system. IF you are going to watch movies or play games then you need a surround system. Just a heads up- He really likes Denon.
