Need help with BBQ place in Charleston

Mar 14, 2015, 9:30 AM

Advice wanted:

I have a customer that is coming into Charleston from San Diego CA for meetings and he wants some southern style pulled pork BBQ. I've told him about the low-country style vinegar based sauce and he would like to try that. Any recommendations on who has the best que and sauce in the Charleston area?

Thanks.

In Charleston I go to Hometeam

Even though the owner is a bulldawg

You can find better if you travel inland

Bessingers BBQ on Savahnah HWY

Mar 14, 2015, 9:40 AM

This is the best bbq place by far. Its also one of the oldest.

Melvin's on Folly Road on James Island is good. However, their sauce in mustard based. Bessinger's on Savannah Hwy. is another option. I believe they also have a mustard based sauce. Vinager sauce is North Carolina style.

It's not BBQ but you should take them to Okra Grill in Mt. P

if you're in the area. Best eats around.

Swig & Swine on Savannah Hwy/ Hwy17. Next to The Glass Onion.
Jonathan Kish is also a Clemson Grad!

I like Hometeam and Melvin's in Mt Pleasant across from original Sticky Fingers

Swig & Swine...spot on! I grew up on Bessinger's (Piggie Park before that) and Duke's...but S&W is really, really solid! They also on 82 Queen, which is the opposite end of the restaurant spectrum, around for over 30 years. Clearly, they know their 'stuff' in the kitchen and on the smoker! :)

Bessinger's on Savanah Hwy

Mar 14, 2015, 12:06 PM

Very good.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bessinger's is awful.

The BBQ in Charlestonn isn't that great, but there are some half way decent places. Home Team BBQ is much better than Bessingers and it's a better place to hangout as well. It's on 61 in West Ashley about a mile from downtown CHS. Nicks downtown on Kind Street is okay as well. It was formerly called Jim and Nicks. I would probably go to home Team BBQ.

Hometeam or JB's Smokeshack

Mar 14, 2015, 1:12 PM

I'll add my vote to the recommendations for Hometeam. JB's Smokeshack on John's Island is also good. Their pulled pork is cooked dry. I like the crispy pieces that come with cooking it the way they do and they have a sauce you should try called "Upstate Vinegar."

Jim&Nicks is good too. Cornbread muffins and peach tea

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's just called Nicks now.

Mar 14, 2015, 2:28 PM

Just in case the person who started the thread can't find them listed due to that. Yeah it's just called Nick's now and no longer Jim and Nicks. I agree with you that it is fairly solid, especially if the original poster is staying downtown.

I prefer the one in North Charleston. They bake all the bread there locally, and ship it to the one downtown. And you can park there too!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for the heads up. Didn't even know about that one.**
