Morgan Freeman and shootings
Dec 15, 2012, 12:31 PM
|
|
Before he passed, Morgan Freeman had this to say about why shootings keep happening. Thought it was spot on-
"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.
It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.
CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.
You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem."

DEER DGUARCELLO

I've gone back and forth the last few minutes trying to decide whether or not I should even write this. In the end, I realized I would regret it if I didn't, so here it goes. I know the last time we saw each other, we weren't exactly hitting the sweetest notes-certain wasn't the way I wanted the trip to end. I suppose I'm responsible and for that, I'm sorry. But in all honestly, if I had the chance, I'd do it again. Marge said I left a stranger and came back a husband; I owe that to you. There's no way I can repay you for all you've done for me, so rather than try, I'm just going to ask you to do something else for me-find the joy in your life. You once said you're not everyone. Well, that's true-you're certainly not everyone, but everyone is everyone. My pastor always says our lives are streams flowing into the same river towards whatever heaven lies in the mist beyond the falls. Find the joy in your life, DGUARCELLO. My dear friend, close your eyes and let the waters take you home.

which is gonna be really rough to see when they start flashing little children's faces on the screen. Kind of hard to focus on them when we don't know who they are yet.
And Bill O'Reilly made a conscious effort NOT to mention the killer's name last night. I like to watch his show (even though I rarely actually do) because he has perspective, something that 99% of the talking heads on TV sadly lack.
Morgan Freeman (or actually who ever signed his name to this fakery) needs to pay a bit more attention to things.

"High capacity magazines". Nothing sensationlized here. A kid just walked in with "high capacity magazine"(since you insist) and shot up a bunch of innocent children. I don't think that CAN be sensationalized.

Was there not an armed rescource officer at the school?
Dec 15, 2012, 1:32 PM

I know we had them in high school, can't remember if we had them in middle or elementary school. He was pretty much useless anyway, 65 years old, limping around and half asleep most of the time. Anyways, there should be an armed officer at every school in America whose job is to make sure things like this don't happen.

referendum that comes along to raise property taxes in order to do something for the schools gets voted down. My kids are grown and were educated in NC. I don't have a kid in school here, but I'm not opposed to having $7 added to my annual property tax. Unfortunately, the local police department can't afford to pay a uniformed cop to man every single school. Neither can the school system.
So, it's a nice thought to say every school in America should have a uniformed officer on duty, but who's going to pay for that?

I agree. When idiots run out on the field during sporting events do they put them on TV? This might not be the best comparison, but maybe the same logic needs to be applied.
