Learned something yesterday

Jun 30, 2016, 12:14 PM

That many of you tnetters are aware of but I find it interesting. A 'lady friend' of mine is in Hawaii for a brief trip ( to get away from me) and she called me yesterday and told me the entire island was overrun with chickens. Apparently they are everywhere. She said that they were eating in a restaurant and a flock walked in through the never closed door as if it were a daily event. The hotel staff told her that one of the requirements for staying at the Marriott was each guest had to take home a #### chicken because they had too many of them. Sounds familiar doesn't it? Have any of you ever witnessed this.?

I'm sure that part was a joke. I believe there is a law against transporting obnoxious animals into the country and we all know how obnoxious a rooster can be.... especially one that wears garnet and crows SEC, SEC SEC!

Key West has plenty of them also.

It has been a problem over there for years....

Three years ago when the family and I were there, we were told that a certain species of the the chickens are actually protected by law. While the state does advocate the removal of non-native chickens, after generations of cross-breeding it's difficult to distinguish if a chicken is a native species or not so people just leave all of them alone.

Yes, that is pretty true. The island of Kauai is overrun with feral chickens as there are no predatory animals to keep them in check. I never saw them on the other islands we visited. We spent the day at one of the parks at the beach and I witnessed several families capture a chicken as they were leaving and get in the car with it. I also had some locals say wild chickens were not very good to eat. Even the local stores have "chicken" souvenirs. Of course hotel guest taking one home is a joke because you cant take one on an airplane. Spam is also a big food staple there. I had a few burgers there and I swear they were made of Spam because they were awful.
