ESPN's Pollack and Palmer break down Clemson-UGA
ESPN college football analysts David Pollack and Jesse Palmer spent the early part of Thursday afternoon on a conference call with the national media, and the early part of the call centered on the Clemson and Georgia opener in nine days and Clemson’s chances of making a run at the four team playoff. What does Pollack say about Deshaun Watson? Where does he rank Clemson's defense? Full Story » |

It is a fair analysis ... but I do not think Stoudt will trun the ball over a lot... I think UGa LBs are good... but I do not think there secondary is as good as ours and they have talent on the DL but we have more and we have depth.... I think it may be close in the 1st half but I hope we blow past them in the 2nd half.

I believe they said the same stuff last year. They'll probably say the same thing next year, and the next, etc. We just need to take care of our business, and that will speak for itself. I do want to see us upset FSU and stomp usuc, though. Beating FSU is a key to getting respect.

I don't see beating FSU this year unless everything goes perfect and we have a Sammy like surprise from either one of the returning guys or less likely, from one of the true freshmen. The odds are against it, but if we get an early T/0 and have some success on offense, it's possible.
Against the dawgs, the odds are against us, but not as long as those dressed in red and black my think. The game I really like the Tigers in gets played in late November.
Our defense will be stout and our offense will improve over the course of the year. By game 12, true freshmen will have had a chance to mature. The offense will be a unit. Couple that with a home game and the Tigers should break the high 5 streak.

I don't understand your logic in thinking we will "blow past" UGA in the 2nd half. How?

I agree. On paper, UGA has to be favored. Of course, the game isn't played on paper. INMHO, we have to bring our A game to have a chance in Athens. I still worry that our OL is a huge question mark. I wish we had a legitimate threat at RB, but no one has really stepped forward at this point. And DJ Howard is a nice highly motivate guy, but still a very average RB. WR is still questionable, and I wonder if Cherone Peake can really get back to full strength and speed by the 30th. To win, I think we have to nickel and dime them with 5 and six yard plays, with an occasional shot down-field to Leggett or Peake. I don't we'll have much of a running game, but hope I'm wrong.

Really?
JawJa's Qb is a fifth year senior and he'll do well but Stoudt won't.. .ok. I'll just hit the hold button and wait. It's just more eSECpn drivel to me. The only thing they said right was Clemson doesn't need to try and set the world on fire and we will win a lot of games.
Play under control, and we should be in a position to win in Athens.

Seems like a very fair assessment. I especially think it's correct that Stoudt shouldn't go out there and be Tajh Boyd. He needs to play within the system and get comfortable for his first game. Success will come if he can stick to the gameplan.

to be a pretty fair and insightful analyst.
It may just be the complete incompetence that he's surrounded by that makes him look relatively good but I gotta say, don't really hate the guy. Palmer on the other hand...

Pollack was very nearly a Clemson Tiger. I've heard him talk about the feeling he got at the top of the hill on his official visit to Clemson. In recruiting Pollack and some OL were pretty tight. At the time, I thought Pollack liked the dawgs and his buddy liked Clemson. They both ended up in Athens.
Actually, I think playing against the Tigers in college impacts his view of the Tigers today. I think we earned his respect on the field back in the day.

I'm not sure that I could be so objective when talking about my Alma mater vs a neighboring rival. Pollack & Herbie do good analysis all around.

is Pollack saying he didn't think our O-line would ever be great. He must not be paying attention to the recruiting class we're putting together this year.

Yea I caught that too...maybe they don't focus on that until they're actually incoming seniors since they've already got 100+ teams to look at here.

Your assumption is probably correct but his wording was insulting. I won't hold it against him, I think he's a good guy so far.

I just assumed he meant "this year" when he said "ever". Otherwise that is a pretty bold/irresponsible statement by Pollack.

I tend to agree. Statements like "ever", "never", or "alwas" are almost never true, particularly if you're talking about forever. Although, Clemson doesn't have a history of "great" offensive lines. We've had some good players and some pretty good lines, but I'm not sure I could name a "great" OL at Clemson. I recall a really good line with 2 guys named Bostic, but it wasn't great across the board and didn't have depth. I had a buddy who played tight end and when the starting RT went down with an injury, they moved him inside rather than having the next guy on the depth chart step up.

Where is Crowder in this mix? He was a very highly regarded recruit (4-star, I think), and is a beast. Could he possibly play OT?

His analysis proved to be correct... we couldn't block them. Pollack is solid and maturing as an analyst. Palmer, NO!
In the end... Boyd's best performance as a Tiger, our skill players, our D line and their coaching blunder/execution on their last possession all came together for that W.

I like our D line Lb maybe a push I like our secondary I like our QB I like their RB I like our WR's O line is a push. I like our TE
Maybe I just have my glasses on, but I really don't think this game will be as close as last year. P&P should be advising UGay not to turn the ball over because they are gonna have enough trouble moving it as it is. I see us winning by 2 TDs.
I'm fine with them saying we need to beat fsu and or USuC. I agree.

We didn't stop Gurley the whole game other than injuring him. If we do that I'm closer to being on board with you. But Gurley man handled us when he was in there. And thats what it will come down to..if we're as good defensively as they say we are then we should shut him down or at least not allow him to gash us consistently.
QB's... i'm not sold on theirs or ours. Cole's never played in a real game yet. This will be it out the gate. He's going to be hit, hurried, and rattled early. Its his response to that which will be the key. Plus remember Sammy's play where he turned a 10 yard sit down route into a 65 yard TD where he blasted that dude in the secondary....do we have those plays this game? Those were answers to scoring drives if you remember. Do we answer like that? without a sammy (dynamic player).
All in all its an interesting game...atmosphere is a factor to our team, 3 and outs will be a key stat, and stopping their running game. The first thing they'll test is our manhood, they're going to run it hard and loud and if we can prove our manhood and stop them then its on...but if we look like we did against FSU on their drives then it will be tough.

provide me any link that indicates they have an excellent OL. They have several new players there. I hardly doubt they win the battle in the trenches. They were whupped last year. Girly got most of his yards on 2 busted coverages.

agree, except i'd give Clemson's secondary the nod. don't know his name but uga only has one safety with experience at secondary. and as far as WR's i would say uga would have the advantage but mitchell is out and possibly scott-wesley as well... WR play will depend on OL protection and QB play more than normal

Good analysis. But UGA has an outstanding OL, so that definitely is not a push. They have a huge advantage at RB. I don't think we win by two TD's. I'd happily take a one point victory. Honestly, I think they win.
