You will be punished for losing out of conference. If Penn state scheduled a cupcake instead of Pitt, they would be in. Simple as that.

Does a one loss Penn state , big ten champ, get left out? No chance. Their loss was to a top 10 team and they would have beaten OSU h2h.

The UM loss would not have mattered as UM had 2 losses, and PSU won head-to-head with OSU and PSU won their conference championship. The Michigan loss would have been totally insignificant. The committee would have been forced to select PSU.

Or they might have bypassed the Big 10 completely

A close look at PSUs schedule shows a bunch of pretty weak wins. The only thing they have is Ohio State and then Wisky in the championship game.

And the statement was
"We will pick whoever the H*** we want to and think up logic later"

aggressively scheduling out of conference and taking care of business... that could also be how they spoke.

They were left out because they had 2 losses & one was by 40

Every team that got in had no more than one loss. I was pretty clear where the break point between 4 & 5 was. Just look at the records of the top four, then the next four.

If you formally state that

Conference chanpionships and head to head are 2 of the criteria for selection then osu did not warrant consideration and should not be in the playoffs. They have now indicated those two criteria do not matter and a waeak out of conference schedule is OK just so you don't lose. CFP = BCS now...

These are only criteria amongst comparable teams. Obviously they didn't see PSU and OSU as comparable.
"The committee selects the teams using a process that distinguishes among otherwise comparable teams by considering conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory) and other relevant factors that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance."

If Ohio State had played someone other than Oklahoma, they wouldn't be in the playoffs.
People knock Washington for playing Rutgers. Well, Penn State played Rutgers and Purdue in conference. 2 of the worst teams in P5 football.

Then, on the other hand, schedule cupcakes and you're subject to the "they didn't play anyone" argument.
