I have been one of the biggest critics of Brownell on this site

The main reason for my low pulse. But let me admit that I was wrong about this man. He has done an amazing job with this team.

You should eat crow. Brad is a great coach.

Been saying that from day 1 and have NEVER deviated from that opinion.

I know a good coach when I see one.

Wow! Sounds like you are a coaching expert! Pretty condescending response to a guy who is admitting he is wrong about a guy. Big win for the bball team!

I think he is alreadyeating crow by admitting he was wrong.

I had begun to have my doubts at the first of this year, but he has continued to coach and the players are believing. Wouldn't it be great if we win the ACC this year?

I have been as well. Just frustrating that the team always seems to start playing in January. Early season losses have killed us. Hope he can salvage this season and I will be happy to jump on the Brad bandwagon. This team is playing with confidence . Something it lacked in previous seasons

Nobody. I mean nobody so don't even front. Nobody thought we would be doing this after the UGA game. Don't hate on this man. I love BB but even I had thoughts about a new coach after that game.

Just because you are shallow and look to your sports teams to give you your self worth do not lump everyone in with you. I know half the people here wanted to fire Dabo and now they cant praise him enough. Brownell's job is a pretty tough job and he does far better than I can.
Go Tigers!

Wow you are pretty stupid my friend. So you wanted to keep him after the last 3 years and the start of this year? Or you just don't care but are going to post about it lol. Thanks tho bro! Sorry I care about the team I pull for.

So what you mad for bro? Because I said everyone wanted a change after the UGA game and now we are all happy. Your content with our basketball team being shitty? When things go bad you don't think change can be good. You just always stick it out.

We won two home games against really good teams. Are we a tournament team? If yes, Brownell did a good job. If no, the team's slide continues. I really don't get why everyone lives and dies game to game. At the end of the year we'll be able to see whether or not the program is getting back to OP levels or whether it remains at BB level.

Drives me nuts. Every game counts and by losing to UMass and Minnesota, the season is still effectively over. I know folks that don't really follow basketball see us beat two ranked teams and start slapping their hands together like barking seals and assume we're tourney bound. Even after two top-10 victories our RPI is sub-100. Virtually no chance at the tournament. As I predicted after the Georgia game, BB would once again overachieve in the ACC acting more as eliminator than securing a post season for Clemson. This is a tired routine and anyone that doesn't see the pattern really doesn't actually watch much Clemson basketball.

Nope - we just have a mediocre basketball program and a lot of people completely embrace that. It's really disappointing when Purnell left us in a situation where we could have made a big hire and punched through to another level. Instead we're a sub 100 RPI team with no chance at the post-season. But get excited about these mid season victories so we can pony up and do it year after year.

IS MAKING IT TO THE TOURNAMENT EVERY YEAR AND MAKING DEEP RUNS IN THE ACC TOURNAMENT. HE DID THAT CONSISTENTLY AND WE WERE A TOP 25 TEAM OFTEN. THAT IS VERY DIFFERENT THAN NEVER BEING A TOP 25 TEAM, AND ONLY MAKING THE TOURNAMENT ONE YEAR AND THEN NEVER MAKING IT AGAIN. HTH.

Re: OP LEVEL

5 of OPs 7 seasons at Clemson we were eliminated in the 1st round of the ACCT.... We lost in Quarters once and Finals once....

We RARELY made runs in the ACCT under OP. He had one magical run through the tournament the rest were very disappointing.

FWIW in Brownells 5 seasons so far we have been eliminated in the 1st round 3 times quarters once and Semis once.

Also we were ranked at the end of the year twice under OP. We were ranked 22nd and 24th.

This post is not a defense of Brownell but a reality check on what OP was actually doing while here. You just made several claims that are just blatantly false.

Fine, he didn't "consistently" make runs.

But he's gotten further in it than Brad has. And the ACC tournaments were determining our seed in the tourney under OP. Under Brad they've been a last ditched effort to scrape together a lost season. And will be again this year.

As usual you can't stay on point. The specific comment was exclusively about expectations being different for baseball and basketball. So, what are those expectations? There is no floor to how bad he can be this year. You declare he gets next year no matter what. So what is the standard next year? "Improve dramatically" is not a very concrete metric. Can he miss the NCAA if there are some more really special transfers sure to be coming in? NIT good enough if we win some big attaboys along the way?

how important it is to make the tournament. It doesn't matter how good we are at X's and O's and whether we win one meaningless game in the ACC tournament before watching our season end without post season play.

OP's "one magical run" in the ACC tourney was better than anything BB has done since OP's guys left after his first season. OP's 4 straight tournaments are 4 times as many as Brad will have gotten to in only one more year than Brad. It doesn't matter if we "gel at the end of each season". We gel on our couch watching post season basketball. Every. Single. Year. I wish Brad would make a tournament just so then we could all shut up about it and stop arguing about whether or not it's acceptable to ask our head basketball coach to make an NCAA tournament every 2-3 years.

What part of this is not a defense of Coach Brownell was hard for you to understand?

I simply corrected misconceptions that you seem to have about OP. YOU said he consistently made runs in the ACCT.... That is simply FALSE. 2 of 7 getting past the 1st round is NOT consistent.

I have no problem with your criticisms of Brownell look in my post history I have said that I am fine with next year being his last year if things dont improve DRASTICALLY. I am just simply showing facts and not glossing over a guy that left us in the middle of the night without even saying a word to his players.

Because firing a coach who is playing ever game as a road game is a pretty ###### way to run an AD.

He has 3 very talented players waiting for next year. If he fails and is fired after that then the next man in will have a pretty good roster.

Re: Congrats on not understanding

It's what makes his cognitive dissonance so incredibly special. With Jack making the tournament - even making the CWS - meant nothing. He had to deliver ACC and/or NCAA championships. Anything less was a total fail. A CWS appearance without winning it or a corresponding ACC championship = absolute total failure. But Brownell literally has to do nothing but win a few upsets each year. That's it. No restriction on how many years with out a postseason he goes. Ultimate loser mentality.

For someone that speaks about the RPI so often, you really don't understand it very well.

We've won 2 games in the past 4 days, and our RPI has jumped over 50 spots. ESPN has us at 102. You're correct that we are not top-100. But we could lose Saturday, and will most likely be Top 100. Its not nearly as impossible to make it jump up as you like to make it seem.

Just won, baby. As they say.

Re:

[1]
Posted: Jan 14, 2016 8:27 PM

I understand it perfectly fine. Yes, it remains within the realm of possibility that we could play our way on the bubble. But it is highly improbable. Far more so than to have won these last two games. Yes, at Viriginia gives us a modest bump win or lose. But that is immediately offset by two games against a 218th ranked Boston College. Anything less than 9-4 here out and you can shut the door. If we had won 2 games against lowly opponents that wouldn't be the case. We would have a much more open path to the tournament. I don't understand how you don't see this pattern happening every year.

2019 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg

Re:

[1]
Posted: Jan 15, 2016 1:52 PM

So you think we have to go 13-5 to make the NCAA Tournament. I highly disagree. 12-6 and we'd be in, 11-7 and we'd be a bubble team.

Even Jon Rothstein said we could play our way in with 17 or 18 wins because our wins would be so strong. It's all a matter of opinion, and I respect yours. Just my thoughts. Long way to go anyway.

Re:

[1]
Posted: Jan 15, 2016 2:40 PM

i would like to believe it but I just don't see it. I dont pull against the team. I want them to succeed. I hate seeing them constantly in this position which is what angers me with the coach. We're also hurt by an incredibly bad strength of schedule. If we're gonna play patsies like PC take a couple games on the road. It would make a tremendous difference in RPI and the team wouldnt be constantly swimming upstream.

We're still a little far out to say anything definitive about RPI. Another couple weeks and the picture will come into sharp focus. If we manage to sweep Virginia and beat Miami then sure we're probably in the discussion as long as we dont lose to any of the ACC bottom dwellers (BC would be a killer). But that is a tall order. Beat Virginia on the road and this team is suddenly legit - which makes the early season that much more baffling. And I still put the inability to get this team ready in a timely manner on the coaches shoulder. Whatever the needed wins are, I hope they get there.

Re:

[1]
Posted: Jan 15, 2016 5:05 PM

I think you're way off, but you're right that time will tell. Beating Miami after beating Duke and Louisville has us in the discussion. Saying we have to sweep Virginia just to get in the conversation is kinda absurd.

And we did take road games. How are we supposed to know that Minnesota is going to be as bad as they are? We scheduled a few teams that had good years last year and are struggling this year. Regardless, our SOS will be top 100.

W? The fact that OP COULDN'T get a win with his best teams and Brad got one with one of his average teams ought to tell you something

The W was in a play in game

Calm yourself. OP's resume is far superior to Brad's.

OP lost to 10 and 12 seeds, I doubt he would have beaten UAB***

Seriously? I wasn't happy that OP couldn't take it to the next level. But you can't even compare the two. Clemson had a chance to make a major hire and try to move up. They decided to play small ball. You're being willfully ignorant if you don't see that this has been a major step backwards.

That OP may or may not have hit his ceiling does not in anyway contradict that BB is still a major step backward. What you're are doing is the definition of a strawman arguement. I even acknowledge that "OP couldnt take it to the next level" in my post.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

The plateau OP reached is well beneath any accomplishments of BB.

OP inherited a team from a coach with a sub .500 overall winning percentage. A coach who only finished 2 games over .500 the year before he took over. He built that into a team that would go to 4 straight NCAAs - three under him.

While there were challenges for Brownell that might not have been apparent to the casual observer they were nowhere near grave enough to warrant what we have gotten for our investment. He had a program that he could sell to recruits as being succesful in both the ACC and nationally. He squandered that completely. We only have success now with disaffected transfers. He has completely abandoned any meaningful efforts in the state of SC.

so, cast your next evasive insult. That's what the internet is for.

Yea, it really sucked

watching us win 20 games a year and get to the NCAA tournament using a full court defense. I'd much rather play half court and never make the post season. That's a huge upgrade.

Moran.

No what sucked was watching that 20 win team get upset

Yes, never making the tournament is much better

not yet found.

Great that we're getting the ball to the wings more with Grantham and Blossomgame. At least one of them should be trying to make a move to the basket with the ball on each possession. If they did this they'd be shooting free throws all night long and fouling out the other team's frontcourt. Case in point, last night.

And for heaven's sake, taking the green light away from Roper has to be done. He's simply not a consistent enough jump shooter to win with.

Same for Grantham & Devoe. They should never be allowed to throw up a jumper without at least one pass into the box or an attempt to drive from the wing.

But even last night, when we got up by 7, we started passing the ball around the top of the key and heaving up jumpers! The lead immediately went to 1 with only 4 trips down the floor!

This team can win, but only if it absolutely commits to getting the ball in the hands of its scorers on the wing (or the creases of a zone), the guards hanging outside for a kick-out to reset (not fire up a jumper), and having Nnoko lurking around the offensive boards for the garbage rebounds and put backs.

They simply won't win consistently without following that offensive formula even when we get the lead. That's their moneyball; their bread & butter; where they should live because they are bigger and better than most teams out there on the wing.

I see us winning lately, but we still have a habit of losing our poise on the offensive end in clutch situations.

I have always thought he was an excellent coach. Recruiting is his biggest challenge, and it will always be a challenge at Clemson for basketball. Hopeful the new Littlejohn will help a bunch. He seems to be bringing in better talent now albeit some with the transfer route. This team can shoot better than any Brownell team I have seen. They seem to only be getting better.

We have a winner!***
