Here come the death panels

Sep 17, 2014, 2:57 PM

“The current system is geared towards doing more, more, more, and that system by definition is not necessarily consistent with what patients want and is also more costly.”

Re: Here come the death panels

Sep 17, 2014, 3:06 PM

the real death panels were board rooms full of insurance executives deciding who to deny life saving cancer treatments in such that they could maintain profits and preserve their 8 figure bonuses, all under the guise of pre-existing conditions and improperly filled out insurance applications.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 17, 2014, 6:56 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok, here is a simpler question so you don't have to read

Sep 17, 2014, 6:04 PM [ in reply to Good one!*** ]

Should aggressive medical procedures to prolong life be used on people who don't want them. Are you saying doctors or, gasp, the government, needs to tell someone how they should die?

The article basically says that the current system is set up to keep the patient alive as long as possible despite the persons actual wishes. Essentially we spend a bunch of money keeping terminal patients who wish to die alive. The article, says that instead, we should focus on the patients wishes and quality of life. This includes sitting down and creating a plan for late life care. This plan includes things like: if X happens to you, what do you want us to do for you.

Putting the power in the patients hands and not in the doctors hands seems reasonable.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uhhhh...my OP had nothing to do with the article

Sep 17, 2014, 6:46 PM

It was about how quickly the liberals in the lunge respond to a conservative....so quickly I would wonder if the response was knowledgable or just vitriol..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Funny thing

Sep 17, 2014, 6:52 PM

I've actually read the report cited in article for my Health Policy Management class. So I guess I was quick to respond because I knew exactly what the post was talking about, and I knew that it was being misrepresented. The fact that the original quote is actually attributed to a Republican(that fact was conveniently omitted), should tell you all you need to know. If you actually want to understand the issue, and not just the buzz words like "death panel" you should read the report from the non-partisan group of experts that came up with the report.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not really interested in the issue actually

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you actually read the article...I'm thinking no

Sep 17, 2014, 5:36 PM [ in reply to xtiger, its amazing how much the lunge libbies know ]

Here is a quote:

“The bottom line is the health care system is poorly designed to meet the needs of patients near the end of life,” said David M. Walker, a Republican and a former United States comptroller general, who was a co-chairman of the panel. “The current system is geared towards doing more, more, more, and that system by definition is not necessarily consistent with what patients want, and is also more costly.”

Stupid libbie Republican recommending death panels.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Another quote

Sep 17, 2014, 5:38 PM

"It called for a “major reorientation and restructuring of Medicare, Medicaid and other health care delivery programs” and the elimination of “perverse financial incentives” that encourage expensive hospital procedures when growing numbers of very sick and very old patients want low-tech services like home health care and pain management."

Is following the wants of patient considered a death panel?
