I was nervous they would go out West, but after seeing the BCS rankings today, if we're both undefeated it'll be #3 vs #5 (or maybe even #4). It'd be impossible for them to pass that up.

But if they do beat Maryland and then when we beat them. That may be enough for us to pass up Oregon on the BCS polls. Pretty close between us and them and with 2 top 5 wins it could be enough to jump them in the only poll that counts (BCS). Go Tigers keep winning.

It helps recruiting, applications, reputation, local economy

It's HUGE PR for Clemson. It would cost tens of millions of dollars to buy that kind of PR.
After GameDay visited last time, the coaches said that recruits were calling them from all over the country. GameDay helps put Clemson on the map nationally.
There have been studies showing that when football teams gain national prominence, student applications increase, and therefore average SATs and academic stature increase. That does more to help Clemson's academic standing more than just about anything Barker does.
GameDay helps the national perception, including that of pollsters, that Clemson is a football power.
What's the downside of pulling for FSU? In any likely scenario, we either beat FSU and win the Atlantic or we don't. Better to do it on GameDay. And if FSU is undefeated it helps our BCSNCG resume.

flooded with applications and a much higher % of those accepted chose to attend Clemson. As a result they ran out of dorm rooms. I remember in Manning we had people living in the study and utility rooms on each floor and the kitchens in the basement. It was crazy!
