"Florida State won its third national championship in Pasadena, Calif., in January, but the appearance in the final BCS title game also cost the university nearly a half-million dollars.

Florida State reported expenses of $2,820,613 -- nearly half of which came from transportation costs -- which exceeded the revenue generated from its BCS appearance by a total of $481,213."

A cost many of use would not mind helping the Tigers with

That's craaaazee. Airfare for 150 people would be around

Apr 22, 2014, 8:26 AM

$100k. Must have been a busload of strippers included in that amount.

Must have been Hookers, instead of just strippers.

they took 699 according to the article

Apr 22, 2014, 8:31 AM [ in reply to That's craaaazee. Airfare for 150 people would be around ]

$1,372,805 to transport 699 people to Pasadena for the game, including 237 members of the team and staff and 416 band members.

That's $1964 per person.

Forgot about the band. Were they also entitled to

female escort services? Is this expense included in the $1,964/person amount?

It's important.

That would be among the 416 members of the FSU band....

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Saw a line item for $100,000 worth of roofies.***

I'd take that loss every day of the week. Of course, it's only a paper loss, because the team cannot put down a line item quantifying the increased revenues they will experience in other areas as a direct result of winning the national championship.

FSU received $18 million for playing in the BCS title game

Apr 22, 2014, 8:45 AM

Clemson generated another $17 million for its appearance in the Orange Bowl. That's over $2.4 million in revenue sharing for FSU alone. FSU may not have been very fiscally conservative with its travel expenses, but they certainly did not have to go out of pocket to cover any of the costs.

Well I think that their deficient could be a lot more than that when you consider pay for play athletes. Ooooops, maybe not, deep pocket boosters and alumni cover those expenses right!!!:)

Nope

Apr 22, 2014, 9:37 AM

They SPENT money on the title trip. They went big, took the whole band, made it a party, traveled expensively, and lived it up to celebrate the trip.

Nothing wrong with it, but they chose how to do it (this is just a guess on my part by looking at the numbers). Don't blame em one bit, but in no way should that money be considered "lost". It was "spent" in pursuit of the team/band/coaches/program enjoying and celebrating a trip to the title game.

The writers that write these articles should lose their job

Apr 22, 2014, 12:11 PM

for buying into this--- the school would love for you to think it lost a little $. However, that's just the expenses matched up against their expense allotment(the ACC grants an allowance) that comes off the top of the 18-$25 mil or whatever the # is now for the a BCSNC participant. The rest of the $ goes into the ACC pool with the other bowl $-- Clemsons Orange Bowl $ minus their travel allotment, and so on. The ACC probably has around $40 mil from bowls to split up among the 14 teams(assuming the newbies got an equal share). So add another 2.5mil to 3mil to FSU's take and you'll get the real picture of hard $ the school made on the bowl season. Note this doesn't even include merchandising, goodwill, donation increases, etc. We get the same dribble from writers every spring...it would be refreshing if the media would hire some folks to write that have some financial sense.
