Why doesn't Bernie pay his fair share in taxes?

Mar 15, 2017, 2:39 PM

13%? lol

Not a good socialist. Maybe he can sell one of his 3 houses to give the gov back some money.

Mar 15, 2017, 2:49 PM

current tax code? No, of course you're not. You're saying that since Trump paid 24% on $150M in income, everybody who makes less than $150M should be paying 24%, because that's only fair.

I've always been curious about the mentality of protecting the delicate sensibilities of the uber rich. Can you shed some light on that? There is a point that billionaires reach where they are profiting disproportionately off of the system in place. Why is it so unpalatable that they pay more in taxes?

ok, lets spell this out

Mar 15, 2017, 3:24 PM

bernie says trump isn't paying his fair share(whatever that means)
trump turns out pays 25% - 38 mill.
Bernie pays 13%.

If trump isn't paying fair share, then bernie sure as hell isn't, according to the world of bern

No, Bernie is paying what is required by the current tax

Mar 15, 2017, 3:38 PM

code, as is Trump, apparently, at least in 2005. You're free to disagree with Bernie's definition of "fair". I'm not even agreeing with Bernie. I'm just saying that everybody paying the same effective tax rate isn't what he's implying by "fair".

But, back to my original question: explain the steadfast defense of the unfairness of billionaires paying higher effective rates. Neither one of us will ever be in that crowd. Do you want to eliminate the AMT so that Trump would only pay 5% on his $150M income instead of 24%? Is that what's fair in your mind? I can't figure out why Trump loves people like you.

I don't think the focus here is Trump....the focus is

Mar 15, 2017, 3:44 PM

Bernie paying a lower rate than most of us on this board, while griping about people not paying enough taxes.

I sort of agree with "If socialism is to be, let it begin with me".....Bernie, a fan of big government, seems to be going out of his way to minimize his governmental obligation, and on the optional side, seems pretty tight with his purse strings towards causes he believes in as well.

The point here is that like most big government tax and spend proponents, when you boil it all down, it's OTHER people's money they really want to spend.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't disagree with any of that.

Mar 15, 2017, 3:52 PM

I'm just saying the argument that "he wants to raise taxes, he should pay more to show that he really believes his nonsense!" is, well...nonsensical. It's stupid for anybody to pay more than they're legally obligated to pay. Basically, based on what xtiger is posturing about, taxes shouldn't ever be raised on billionaires unless a billionaire proposes it, or unless the legislator who makes a tiny fraction of said billionaire is already paying the same effective (and legally obligated) rate. Are either of those likely to happen? I guess Bernie comes off as a hypocrite if that's how you want to see it, but isn't he advocating a tax increase for himself? Wouldn't he pay more in taxes if he's successful? Why would he do so before that point?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So for anybody to make the claim that uber-rich should pay

Mar 15, 2017, 4:00 PM

more in taxes, they would need to be uber-rich? I guess we just disagree on that then. And let me reiterate...I'm not even saying the uber-rich should pay more in taxes. It's just kinda weird that you're only allowed to legislate to people in your own socioeconomic level/class, no?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

$250k+ is uber rich?

Mar 15, 2017, 4:03 PM

Call me cynical, but I thought it odd that he specified an income tier JUST above his own as the starting point for the tax hikes. Why not make it just below his, at $200k?

I see self-interest all over it.

No. That's not accurate.

Mar 15, 2017, 3:40 PM [ in reply to Anyone who advocates raising other peoples taxes ought to be ]

If he's included in the group of people that would have their taxes increased (he would be), and is successful in raising the effective tax rate for people in his tax bracket, then he is legally obligated to pay more in taxes. Until that happens, why should he pay more than other people in his bracket or with his income?

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because he's the one who wants to raise the fugging taxes

Mar 15, 2017, 3:47 PM

If he thinks that's the answer, by all means, lead by example. If he doesn't think the rich are paying their fair share, he needs to evaluate what he thinks a fair share is and pay it. Why would anyone listen to him otherwise? It's like a guy who orders appetizers that nobody wants and then decides y'all should split the tab equally.
