Aight lungers...

Oct 3, 2018, 2:07 PM

I have a decent wireless router... and by decent, I mean the best you can buy at Best Buy. It is not strong enough to reach throughout my house. If I am upstairs, it has to go through 2 floors and about 60 ft away. Is there a router that will service that?

I do not want to move my router because it is where my server is currently and I want to keep that together in the downstairs closet.

Thanks guise... luh ewe.

Ethernet over power adapters

Oct 3, 2018, 2:10 PM

I've been using the same ones for a few years and they still work well.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

or this. I had this in old house, and worked very well

Oct 3, 2018, 2:14 PM

however, you generally buy them in pairs, and that can add up depending on where you want them.

They do have some that are wireless repeaters, or have up to 4 ethernet ports.

I have 4 total that I'm not using since upgrading to Google Wifi, got'em years ago and think they're limited to 100mbps. I'll let'em go for the right price :)

naw man

Oct 3, 2018, 2:18 PM

they are up to gig speed now.

The EoP adapter I have now has a wireless AP on the other end. Internets is only about 75 Mb, so it doesn't really matter how fast it will go. As long as it does 75 Mb, I'm all good.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

oh yeah, mine are pretty much the first ones made

Oct 3, 2018, 2:25 PM

but still worked well...YankeeJoe might want the home network stuff to go fast AF, separately from what his Prodigy service is pushing

May not work depending on how your house is wired and circuited.

They can have problems between circuits.

They can I guess, but I haven't seen it.

Oct 3, 2018, 2:52 PM

I've used them in two separate detached garages that had they own 100 amp sub panels coming off the main break panel.

Im not up on all of this, but would it still work

Oct 3, 2018, 2:27 PM

if it went through a subpanel as well?

FOr example:

input outlet -> wire -> 100 amp subpanel -> wire -> 200 amp main breaker -> output outlet

where have we heard about a server in a closet before?

Oct 3, 2018, 2:10 PM

If you want to replace your router, you could go with mesh, but it's relatively expensive.

If you are just looking for an extender, then they run $15 to $25 on amazon.

I'd suggest one that has an ethernet port, but it may not matter to you.

Get one that does 5g if your router supports it.

I don't think you get any benefit out of a mesh extender if your router doesn't support mesh.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've never gotten an extender to work***

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Think of it this way......

Oct 3, 2018, 6:34 PM

Extender gives you a larger range for your signal (less dropped wifi). BUT, it does nothing to increase the speed of your connection. In fact a full signal attached to an extender can be slower than if you didn't have it and had half a signal connected directly to the router. But it will be a more STABLE signal, albeit a bit slower.

Mesh will give you a strong signal and theoretically no drop-off in speed. What makes Orbi better for speed, supposedly, is that the satellite and base have a dedicated 5ghz channel JUST so the satellite and base can communicate. Then you have another 5ghz band from the base and extender for your other devices to connect. This means as long as you have a decent signal from the base to the satellite, you will get full speed all over the house on all devices.

Side note.....

Oct 3, 2018, 6:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Aight lungers... ]

Would not do mesh unless you have 100mpbs or higher internet speed. My problem is I have a nice router, but since upgrading internet speed to 400mbps, I can't download but at 185mpbs upstairs.

SUPPOSEDLY the Orbi mesh system will give 400mpbs across most of 5,000 square feet. Supposedly.

what brand is your main router now??***

Oct 3, 2018, 2:53 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In order of effectiveness....

Oct 3, 2018, 2:53 PM

- Run an ethernet cable from your router to a room upstairs and put in a wired wireless access point
- Mesh wifi like Google Wifi. Buy the 3-pack, deploy, profit
- Wireless over powerline - it can work, but it can also be tricky depending on the wiring in your home
- Wireless repeater

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think 10 ft monster cable will be sufficient to go

Oct 3, 2018, 7:28 PM

hang yourself.
