Can I get a reasoning behind Hatfield over Swinney?

Dec 6, 2012, 1:33 PM

Not saying it's a crazy thought. Just wondering what your reasoning was.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, I'm saying it's crazy. They are not even remotely

close. Hatfield couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. First couple of years he had the most talented teams in Clemson history. By the third year, the recruits were gone and he was losing.

For some reason he was able to win 8 games his last season. We won every close game we played. It was very lucky. Our losses were horrible. 57-0 to FSU, 24-0 to UNC, a loss to Wake when Wake was horrible.

Speaking of crazy....

Dec 6, 2012, 3:30 PM

I finally found out who Leslie Van Houten is- on the History Channel the other night

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, he could coach. He could not recruit sailors

"IDIOT POSTER OF THE MONTH SO FAR...GWP-- You have won IPM Award for your failure to completely comprehend a clear post & then choose to attack someone who points out your ignorance. While you are not yet in the same No Class Catagory as deRoberts, ClemTiger117 & Tigerdug23, you are getting closer to the Sewer Dwellers." - coachmac

yeah I don't know anything about the old guys

Dec 6, 2012, 1:34 PM

basically just went by their winning percentage. Could be more to the story on a lot of them

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dec 6, 2012, 2:12 PM

Actually West inherited a rebuilding project! Ken Hatfield was by FAR THE WORST RECRUITER that we have had at Clemson in my lifetime. When we got rid of him the cupboard was bare!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He took over a 9 win club and 5 years later...3-8

Dec 6, 2012, 2:23 PM

That's pretty bad

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bowden was a hard worker. Finished 6th and 8th.***

Re: my list

Dec 6, 2012, 2:27 PM [ in reply to my list---corrected with only one stinky Hatfield :-) ]

My lifetime.
1. Ford
2. Howard
3. Pell
4. Swinney
5. Bowden
6. Parker
7. Hatfield
8. West
9. Ingram

From the top…
If Ford wasn’t involved in probation, there would be more separation between him and Howard.

Howard took put us on the porch with the big dogs.

Pell would be higher, but he gets dinged for contributing to probation.

Swinney has us complaining about 10 win seasons. Maybe should be above Pell given Pell’s questionable ethics (yes, that is part of my criteria).

Bowden took a pitiful program and built it into a good team with some national significance. He set the stage for success.

Parker inherited a bad team and then Pell won with his players. He might should be higher.

Hatfield started the downward slide to ground zero and West dug a hole.

I was too young to remember, but Ingram’s record sucked.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pell after two only seasons and probation?

Dec 6, 2012, 2:32 PM

You've got to be kidding.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How is Neely so low?

Dec 6, 2012, 2:34 PM

he had a mediocre record but his last 2 seasons were great (including Clemson's first bowl game), he coached Banks McFadden, and he helped Rupert Fike found IPTAY.

As far as his contributions to Clemson football, I'd put him top 5. I'd also put Hatfield right above Hootie Ingram and Red Parker as the 3 worst Clemson coaches.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Howard is severly overrated on your list.

Dec 6, 2012, 2:36 PM

Just because you coach for 800 years doesnt mean you are great. Check his stats. 3-3 in bowls, averaged finishing 4th in conference play, 165-118 overall.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Howard is severly overrated on your list.

Dec 6, 2012, 2:38 PM

But look beyond the wins and loses for Coach Howard!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

like what***

Dec 7, 2012, 2:51 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Heisman was the coach from 1900-1904

Dec 6, 2012, 3:32 PM

Maybe you need to go back and include him.
