Water heater update
May 23, 2018, 8:51 AM
|
|
replaced the thermostats and elements yesterday, hooked it all back up, turned power back on, went to bed, no hot water this morning.
I rechecked all the wiring today and it was wired correctly. I used the multimeter and checked the power to everything again and it all seems to be powered.
Should I just give up and get a tankless water heater?

I have no clue but whenever we had water heater problems my dad would send me under the house to push the red button.

You probably don't have the electrical service to the house needed to run an electric tankless that's large enough. Those things require stupid amounts of electricity.

The sized one I wanted requires three separate 40A/3ph breakers to it. Technically it is step loaded and will only use element when needed, jump up to two if the inlet is colder and demand requires, etc.

Instantaneous are maintenance ######
May 23, 2018, 9:05 AM
|
|
They need constant attention, especially if your water has minerals.
They are also twice the price of a tank and if you're doing electric, they are energy hogs.
Instantaneous is only worth while with gas.
For electric, i'll wager you're short on power too.
2.5 GPM Shower Head 60°F Ground water 110°F Shower temperature
2.5 GPM x 500 x (110°-60°) = 62,500 BTU / 0.95% efficiency = 65,800 BTU Input
65,800 / 3,412 = 19kW Element
19kW @ 240V = 80 Amps => 100 Amp breaker

This is the kind of info I'm looking for
May 23, 2018, 9:09 AM

No gas line into our place so it would have to be electric. The current water heater is on a 240V circuit and it looked like a lot of tankless electrics used that as well.
In my readings this morning I have been learning that tankless electric can be pretty meh though so I am becoming less interested in that route.

Your current water heater is most likely a 4.5 kw (kilowatt). The tankless would likely be at the very least 15kw, and you'll never be satisfied with it.

So you have voltage at the heating element, or at the thermostat?
If you have voltage at the heating element and it's not making the water hot, then there's an issue with the element.
If this is the case, disconnect the power, and read the resistance across the element.
Report your findings here.
In the mean time, take advantage of truck stop showers. I'm sure one of the manwhoars on here can point you to a good one. A912® TXtigerfan

I'll have to work on this more tonight, but I'm not sure why the new elements would not have continuity.
I will be taking advantage of the YMCA showers as they are close to both work and home.
After last night's cold shower, I wasn't sure if my balls would ever descend again.

If you have separate valves at your faucet, then yes, you wouldn't have any flow. If yours were like mine, with a single handle, you would have flow unless you went 100% to the hot side, and then you wouldn't have any.
Did you get the correct wattage elements?

drain the water heater again, take the elements out, lay on something that won't burn/conduct electricity, then turn on the power and see if they get hot. It's not OSHA approved but at least you know.
Also, do NOT get a tankless water heater unless it is gas. Electic tankless are useless ##### that will kill your electric bill.

I don't want to die or burn the place down. I will be rechecking to make sure there isn't a short in them somewhere. Tankless is pretty much off the table at this point. Between here and my browsing of the interwebs no one likes electric tankless.

Just check the resistance across the element with your multimeter.
Power / Wattage (should be on the element, or package that it came in)
Voltage (220V)
Resistance = (Voltage x Voltage) / Power
The resistance that you read on the meter should be ballpark what you get from the calculation.
My gut tells me that the element will read open...

generally the bottom element that fails. Maybe that's because that house had no water softener and a lot of lime that would build up in the bottom. But anyways, that's the symptom of the bottom one burning out. You can still have a short-term tepid water supply if the upper one still works.
so, yeah. You made it worser.
Last time I had a water heater issue, it was 15+ yrs old and the pressure relief valve was leaking. It was rusted solid and impossible to remove. I replaced the whole unit. They've got those new water line fittings that are easy to use and don't require soldering.

fill well casing with gasoline, light on fire, wait for chemical reaction to generate H20. Restart well. Add a few tsps of bleach to the well to kill the bad smells.
Enjoy your refurbished HWW (hot water well).

It is possible that the new elements were ruined...
May 23, 2018, 11:25 AM
|
|
if you turned power back on to the unit before filling the tank up. Elements can burn up real quick on an empty hot water heater. No hot water to tell the thermostat to shut off so pop goes the brand new element. Ohm out the elements to insure they are still good, check wiring, and make sure the tstat didn't get bumped down to well below factory setpoint somehow.
Also, is it no hot water to all of the house or just one fixture? It is possible that part of the dip tube broke off and is effecting hot water flow, but that would typically only effect a single fixture. This is all I can think of right now. I will drink more beer and see what else I can come up with.
(Well unless the dip tube was really broken badly. Then it could effect flow to the entire house. But that would show up in your water pressure as well as temperature. )

The water heater was full before I turned the power back on

so I don't think that's it. I plan to check the resistance of the elements again when I get home to make sure they're ok. I turned the thermostats both up this morning in hopes that would help. They were both around 120 this morning prior to me turning them up.
There was no hot water at any fixtures today so I don't think it's a dip tube issue.
Thank you for your coherent response.

That's what I'm waiting on.
Do you have continuity through the elements?

1.) Find a buddy with a good 'Home Warranty' service.
2.) Take your broken water heater and swap it out with his.
3.) Call his home warranty folks and wait for repairman to tell you water heater is fubar'd and will have to be replaced.
4.) Once Home Warranty replaces his hot water heater with new:
a.) Put his old water heater back and take your NEW one home. Buy him a 15 pack of Keystone Light for his trouble.
b.) If he is a really good buddy, maybe consider letting him keep the new water heater and you take his old one.
5.) Would usually be 'Profit', but steps 1-4 involve way too much effort and BS, effectively cancelling out any 'Profit' derived.
6.) Continue showering at YMCA because lower water bill and you like it.
7.) Profit from step 6.
