Liberals don't like Bolton any more now than they did before. He would probably be a powerful witness if he testified, though. The same could be said for Mulvaney or Pompeo, although they have more reason to be loyal to Trump.

Of course, I'm generalizing. As you said, this isn't going to make principled liberals like him, but he's been treated pretty badly by liberals.

more wrong about him looking for fame. He's a principled guy, misguided as they may be to non-warhawks. I don't think he approves in the least of the integrity of the POTUS office being abused like this administration clearly has.

I've heard he was pretty appalled about how things were run in the WH. Trump's back-channels led to a number of embarrassing situations where Bolton and his team didn't know whether there would be follow through on anything they said.

One has to assume it is because he thinks he is in a no-win situation. Or it could be that he has been threatened. Will we ever know?
