Our D is going from 2/3 star players to 4/5 star players
Jan 14, 2016, 8:38 AM

And you guys think we will have a drop off?? Our D will be twice as talented as last year and this year. I loved those guys but if our coaches can do what we did with 2 and 3 stars just imagine now!!

The difference is experience and knowledge of the scheme.

We should be good once they pick it up. But judging the effort we had out of some in the secondary over the second half of the season, it should be an improvement. GO TIGERS!!!

The drop off worries for me are due to lack of experience not necessarily lack of talent.

Talent doesn't always beat experience and experience doesn't always beat talent. For example, does anybody honestly think their would be any drop off from Goodson to Shaq Smith if he started? I sure don't. I actually think it'd be an improvement because Shaq is faster and can cover like a safety.

that all depends on the position imo......

on average there's a huge difference between a 2/3star WR and 4/5star WR (see sammy watkins freshman year)
on average there's a huge difference between a 2/3star QB and 4/5star QB (see last year)
I think 4/5star DEs and DTs can jump in and make a big impact when replacing a 2/3star DE or DT.............see Christian wilkins and Shaq lawson compared to who they replaced from last year
Cornerback is IMO a little more difficult, but the "ELITEs" can make the adjustment very quickly problem is right now we don't have a "christian wilkins" or a "shaq lawson" at the cornerback position (Mark fields being a possible exception)..........I also think you can pretty much throw an athlete back at safety and he can be successful. Biggest concern for me for next year is CB but even after losing what we're losing BV will still have us in the top 20 defensively.

Depending on the player but improving a 5 star as much as you improved a 3 star one would think the 5 star would end up better wouldn't you say. There is exceptions to everything in life. If you think the way you think why wouldn't we just recruit all 2 and 3 stars and not worry about 5 stars?

especially the postseason games. But that's like saying you don't have to go to college to be successful just like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs.
We'll always find exceptions that a walk-on can play like a superstar like Renfrow. A better example would be Carl Nassib of Penn State. No matter how much we praise our defensive ends. The national award for this position goes to that guy. He was a walk-on and was never a starter until this reason. But these are rare cases.
On the other hand, there are those 5 stars who can turn out to be a bust. An easy example is Mike Bellamy.
But I'm sure most schools would take any 5-star player over a walk-on.

Write this down. Our d will be a top 10-20 defense. Maybe better. Our offense just put up 40 pts and 550 TDS against " best front seven in the history of football." No team will stop our offense next year, period. I expect to be in Tampa.

Yessir!!! It isn't going to be easy going on the road to Auburn FSU and GT but I see DW4 out scoring any team in the nation if he is called upon to do so. Our D will be strong but they just need a couple of stops a game and keep the big play away and we will be fine. I just don't see DW4 losing.

I don't think that's the point of the question.
Jan 14, 2016, 9:59 AM

Both Goodson and Reader were rated 3 stars by Rivals.
That said, the OP makes it sound like we have 2/3-star across the board (or most) on defense and then will be replaced by 4/5-star across the board.
Look closely regarding the star levels, I think it's gonna be a slight upgrade overall, but a slight downgrade on the secondary. Regarding the secondary, it'll be a huge downgrade in term of experiences. I guess that's everybody's concern.

After reading through this thread, I find it funny that...
Jan 14, 2016, 9:45 AM
|
|
roughly about 10 years or so back when we didn't have this type of recruits, members on the message board sorta said that star levels by scouting sites were overrated. Our 2/3-star players back then were highly talented and as talented as any teams in the nation.
Now, we couldn't be more hungrier for those 4/5-star recruits.
I've always followed these sites and compared our recruits to those from other teams. So, I kinda have realistic expectation of a football season. I recall that, when I saw announcements by Stephone Anthony and Tony Steward, I felt the direction of the program was indeed on the rise and I told a lot of friends that a chance of Clemson for the national title wouldn't be for too long.

Keep in mind that our O is going to put other teams in such a whole that they will be forced to pass. That's when we pin our ears back and rush opposing QBs into mistakes and turnovers. Our D will be top 15 this coming year. We have talent everywhere. We have gamers that we haven't even seen play yet. I am really excited and looking forward to this year coming up. I have been for a long time.

You're putting too much faith in star rankings given by websites of hs kids.
Not saying Clemson will struggle next year, but your argument is just juvenile. "He was a four star so he'll be twice the player a two star was."
There is a reason TJ Green started and Geohaghan transferred to SC State.

Stars matter man!! Not always but the majority. I'm not saying a 5 star can't bust and a no star Renfrow can be great. I like that we have 4 and 5 stars instead of 2 3 and 4.

Of course they matter.
But they're not as simple as you argue. Otherwise Alabama would have blown you out of the water Monday night and FSU would have beaten you earlier in the year.

We have DW4 buddy. That changes everything. As well BV forms his 2 star recruits into NFL starters so imagine what he does with 5 star recruits. It's a mix of everything and Clemson is just getting started.

just like GPA of a college student. Those with good GPA tend to show good quality in them and may translate into success in life in general, but not always. On the other hand, it's not necessary that one has to go to college to be success. But in general, any parents would want their children to go to college and make good grades. This can be a direct analogy to 5-star players versus walk-ons.
