On This Date: 1982 UGA tops Clemson under Sanford Lights

Sep 6, 2020, 4:19 PM

September 6, 1982
Athens, GA

(11)Clemson - 7
(7)Georgia - 13

ABC thought so much of the September 6, 1982 contest between the previous two National Champions, they put the game on national television on Labor Day Night.

But like all big games that are over-hyped, the overall play of the two teams disappointed the country. Clemson quarterback Homer Jordan, a native of Athens, Ga., threw four interceptions in his homecoming, while Heisman Trophy contender Hershel Walker played very little due to a broken thumb. In all, there were 6 turnovers and though the game was very dramatic at times, the offenses combined for only 490 yards in the seventh-ranked Bulldogs’ 13-7 victory over No. 11 Clemson.

Other Games This Date
2014: (23)Clemson- 73 SC State - 7
2008: Clemson - 47 The Citadel - 17
2003: Clemson - 28 Furman - 17
1997: (18)Clemson- 23 Appalachian State- 12

I was also there. Turnovers killed us.

Two other things I recall. Outside the stadium there was a breathalyzer stand. It was like a contest to see who could blow the highest. People were blowing 2.7, 2.8 etc.....and then going in to the stadium.

When the game was over, the UGA fans were super aggressive. I pulled up one of those 4ft stakes that were used to rope off grass areas from cars. We made it back to the car unscathed, but I had my doubts for about 10 minutes.
