For fun I tried to MATHS the rankings based on a point system where teams are put in 4 Categories and are assigned a Championship value for performance against. In this system you are rewarded for winning always and greatly for road wins. You lose points for losing and are penalized more for losing at home. In both cases outcomes become more impactful for high level wins and bad losses.
How do you get to which bucket teams go in. At year start teams are put in 4 buckets by Committee based on same process. At week 6 of the season those 4 buckets are updated and then at season end after conf champs they are again updated. Your final rank is based on final buckets by committee, the initial and mid-year are just indicative. This just puts the committee in the position of getting teams into 4 really big buckets, with FCS and lower always in Other.
Play with it for fun and see what you think. The point values probably need some tweaking but they should seem intuitive. Have fun.
