Natty vs. Heisman Winners?
Sep 19, 2019, 10:59 AM
|

Can you name the last 10 National Championship Winners AND the last 10 Heisman Winners in order without looking any up?
I have a theory that the Heisman Trophy has become more forgettable of an accomplishment over the last decade and I want to test it.
GO!

Yeah--the impetus for this was, with the way Dabo coaches

and way we play, I don't think we'll have a Heisman winner any time soon even though Watson and Lawrence have legit claims to deserving one.
It's such a political/popularity contest that requires a lot of stat padding. I don't think Dabo likes to play that game so I don't see us having one under the current way it's selected.
BUT I also don't think it's as revered or at least popularly remembered anymore and winning the Natty is obviously still a bigger deal so it's a tradeoff I'd take 100% of the time.
Does anyone remember that Troy Smith won it in '06? Or Robert Griffin III in '11? Derrick Henry in '15?

It is a travesty that Deshaun never won it, and that CJ was no closer to winning it than he was. I will be shocked if we ever have a winner due to coaching philosophy and the team-first character of our players. I could not care less, but I do hate it for the players. Despite their words and actions, I believe it is still a big deal to them.

I can probably name 6 or 7 of the Heisman winners
Sep 19, 2019, 11:07 AM

only because most of them were QB's (Murray, Mayfield, Jackson, Henry, Mariota, Winston and that idiot Johnny Manziel). I know Ingram, Cam and Tebow were in there somewhere too.
The last ten National Champions were; Clemson, Bama, Clemson, Bama, Ohio State, Florida State, Bama, Bama, Auburn, and Bama.

Tebow was actually '07 but that's pretty good recall. I had

to wrack my brain to get Mariota and the '11 Winner, which most people have forgotten entirely!

I'd like to see Clemson with a Heisman winner,

but the media has to be taken out of the equation.
It should be the Heisman Trust selecting candidates toward season's end, then voting after the national title game. Further, I believe the winner should be a junior entering the draft or a senior. Two winners come to mind: Johnny Football and Infamous Jameis.

I'll try...
Sep 19, 2019, 11:16 AM

|
'09 Bama Bama RB whose name escapes me '10 Auburn Cam '11 Bama RG3 '12 Bama Johnny '13 FSU Winston '14 O310 St Mariota '15 Bama Big Bama RB '16 Clemson Lamar '17 Bama Baker '18 Clemson Murray
I'll always take the Natty, which is largely proven on the field. The Heisman...nah...not so much.

Natty 2018: Clemson Bama Clemson Bama 2014: Ohio St FSU Bama Bama Auburn Bama 2008: Florida LSU Florida Texas gets hazy after this, maybe USC, LSU or Ohio st, Miami?
Heisman: 2018: Kyler Murray Baker Mayfield Lamar Jackson 2015: Derek Henry 2014: Marcus Mariota 2013: Jameis Winston 2012: Johnny Manziel? or was he 2011? 2011: ??? 2010: Cam Newton 2009: Mark Ingram ??? 2007: Tim Tebow? or was he 2008? ??? 2005: Reggie Bush 2004: USC QB, Maybe Leinhart? Just remember they had 2 in a row
Not going to lie, it helps to remember who the Natty champs were to get the Heisman winner.

Was the Heisman ever bigger than the national title though?

2018 - Clemson / Kyler Murray 2017 - Alabama / Baker Mayfield 2016 - Clemson / Lamar Jackson 2015 - Alabama / Derrick Henry 2014 - Ohio St / Marcus Mariota 2013 - FSU / Jameis Winston 2012 - Alabama / Johnny Manziel 2011 - Alabama / Robert Griffin III 2010 - Auburn / Cam Newton 2009 - Alabama / Mark Ingram
I couldn't remember 2011 off the top of my head, but i knew RG III won one and that was the only year i had left open at the end.
4/10 won both the Heisman and the title at the end of the year FWIW.

2008 - Florida / ??? Was thinking that this was Tebow but that was 2007. 2007 - LSU / Tim Tebow 2006 - Florida / Ohio State QB.. umm.. Troy Smith 2005 - Texas / Reggie Bush (vacated so Vince Young should probably have it now) 2004 - USC / Matt Leinart (this was also the year Adrian Peterson was insane for OU) 2003 - LSU / Red-headed OU QB.. something White... Jason i think. Yeah, Jason White. 2002 - Ohio St / Maurice Clarett?. No it was Carson Palmer 2001 - Miami / Nebraska option QB.. not Scott Frost.. Eric Crouch? 2000 - Oklahoma / Chris Weinke? 1999 - FSU / ??? Not Mike Vick... i really don't know.
I definitely don't know 2008 or 1999. I feel pretty good about the other 8.
