Apr 15, 2020, 10:13 AM

I'm just going to mail in a piece of paper that says "Payment status not available"

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I should write that on a piece of paper when I send my taxes

My wife got hers today

Apr 15, 2020, 10:23 AM

Going to feel nice filling the boat up with tax payer dollars. I can see how politicians get addicted to it.

Lol, I'll get back less than 1/30th of what I paid.

Apr 15, 2020, 10:26 AM

When they give me MORE than I paid in taxes, then I'll be living off the teet.

Congrats on the wife getting hers and filling the boat. That does feel nice. Bet the little man in the boat is happy ;)

Personal property taxes in SC are out of hand

Apr 15, 2020, 10:58 AM

I will bet there are a lot of people paying more in car tax than house tax.

What kills me is how they determine the value of a car

Apr 15, 2020, 11:04 AM

especially new.

My new car was taxed / appraised at 30% more than what I paid.

Then, the 2nd year, the tax value on my 1.5 year old car with 35,000 miles was still HIGHER than the original purchase amount.

Yet they will determine a home value on the price paid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you buy your latest boat new?

Apr 15, 2020, 11:06 AM

I feel like I need to go to the ER for a rape kit after I pay those every year.

I could see a Youkon XL or Denali pushing it to the level of the property taxes on the house though.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:00 AM [ in reply to I paid more in property taxes alone this year than she got ]

this year is the lowest increase since I've had a house. Every year it's been $30+ each year. This year it's an increase of $8.

Because our smart local government realized it takes more money to run a rural water system than just the town water system. Who would have guessed.

Strangely, I never got a tax bill on my boat for 2019

Apr 15, 2020, 11:05 AM

I sold a boat, bought a boat....but you know how they are 1 yr behind.

So why no tax bill, IDK?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whoever owns it January 1st of that year pays the taxes

Apr 15, 2020, 11:08 AM

Maybe you timed it right? I bought my boat at the end of January and didn't get a tax bill for 2 years.

Yeah, but I should have seen a bill for the boat I sold

Apr 15, 2020, 11:15 AM

but I didn't....right?

I mean with my 3 previous boats, I did not receive a bill the first year of ownership, but I did receive a bill after it was sold.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They don;t always send out a bill.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:25 AM

Check online to see if you owe taxes on it. One year I got a late due notice but had never rec'd the bill.

When I moved to Clemson I never got a bill for my boat property taxes..then i moved back here and got two...one from Pickens cty and one from CHS county. I called Pickens and they said to pay whichever one I wanted. I paid CHS cty 'cause it was cheaper.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, I checked online....I mean I guess it's a good thing.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:31 AM

_______________________________

There was that time though they sent my tax bills to my previous address and I never got them. Then 3 yrs later, there was a bright pink sign in my yard that said "PROPERTY FOR SALE, TAX AUCTION" or something like that. That was cool.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had a boat I sold to a guy in Louisiana or somewhere down

Apr 15, 2020, 11:36 AM

that way. I got the tax bill and called the auditors office. I told them I know longer owned the boat boat, and asked what would happen if I didn't pay the taxes ? They said they would put a tax lien on the boat. I told them that I no longer had the boat, and didn't know where it was. They said if they couldn't get the boat then they'd have the sheriff put a warrant out for my arrest (??) I'm like WT F? Would I be going to debtors prison?

Basically, auditor dude didn't have an answer for that, and just made up some stuff. I don't think I ever paid the taxes on it and never heard anything else about it. I probably still owe taxes on in from 2007.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I had a boat I sold to a guy in Louisiana or somewhere down

Apr 15, 2020, 11:40 AM

I wondered the same, but technically, I get the bill a year late after purchase, then I get it again a year late after sold......So I pay a bill for every year of ownership

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thats true.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:41 AM

But I don't think I ever paid the bill for the last year I owned it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And its going to be worse this year.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:31 AM [ in reply to They don;t always send out a bill. ]

We'll have to pay taxes twice, depending on when you boat comes up for DNR renewal. My DNR sticker expires n July, so i'll have to pay taxes then, due to the change in how they are doing it yearly.

I just paid taxes in January. Unless the state/DNR does some prorating to it (which is doubtful, because those taxes I paid in January were in arrears) I'll pay $2800 in taxes in my boat in one year.

That will happen to everyone who has a boat in SC sometime in the next 2 years.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think the DNR renewal is too bad though?

Apr 15, 2020, 11:35 AM

I remember it being like $50 or something, it wasn't anything like property taxes.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure how this going to work.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:40 AM

Here is the email i got from them in January:

Jan. 1, 2020

Boat registration change starts today
STARTING TODAY: Registering your boat has changed from every three years to every year.

Current numbers and decals will remain valid until they expire.

Anyone considering purchasing a used boat can visit our S.C. Boat Facts and look up the hull ID to make sure the boat’s taxes are up to date.

If you’re buying a boat for the first time in 2020, you will need to visit your county tax office and pay the property tax due on the boat based on the bill of sale. After that, apply to SCDNR for an updated registration.

See more (push button link<img border=">

http://www.dnr.sc.gov/boating/2020RegistrationRenewalChanges.html?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=

From that page, this is the part that makes me think we'll be double taxed in one year:

Current Owners: The expiration month on the vessel’s current decal will continue to be the month that property taxes are due on that boat. For example, if the boat registration expires in June, then both property taxes and annual registration fees for the coming year will be due in June. (Again, current three-year registrations will be valid until the year of their expiration).

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They split the tax lookup for Anderson County

Apr 15, 2020, 11:42 AM

and this may have been the reason I did not get a bill for 2019.

The renewal though is only $10/yr where it was $30 for 3 yrs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ohhh, sheet. I see now.

Apr 15, 2020, 11:45 AM [ in reply to I'm not sure how this going to work. ]

I guess I got lucky, mine goes thru Feb of 21 so it shouldn't change much for me.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, not unless you have to pay property taxes

Apr 15, 2020, 11:53 AM

twice in 2 months: Once in January for 2020 taxes, then again in February for 2021 taxes.

Thats what i think is happening here.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ah I see

Apr 15, 2020, 11:06 AM [ in reply to I'm not even factoring in my house taxes ]

Car taxes are crazy. All of the boats are really old (newest one is a 2001) so no taxes.
