An example of how resilient soldiers can be: on my ward at Walter Reed Army Hospital in late 1970, in which I was one of only a few out of the 40 or so wounded who still had both arms and legs, one guy stood out. He had both legs amputated above his knees and moved about in a wheelchair and was famous for his "wheelies". When a newly injured amputee arrived he would always meet them and show a great sense of humor to let them know life had only changed and had not come to an end. One new guy who had lost his legs had his family come to visit for the first time and you could feel their sadness from across the room where I was . This guy wheels up to the family and talks to them for awhile and you could tell they felt better, but the unforgettable thing that really stood out was that as he prepared to roll away he asked the soldier's Dad if he could "loan me a hundred bucks until I get back on my feet?" and roared with laughter as he as he did a 180 in his chair. Never forget that guy and what he did for families like that.
