From a conservative, it seems milder than the headlines

make out.

We are on the wrong road on health care, imo. The answer to the high cost is not a govt takeover. We'll get higher costs and lower quality.

The student loan thing should be done only if the stupid thing that got us here in the first place is stopped, the govt guaranteed loans. Yes, the students and parents got themselves into that mess, but we enticed them into it. I'm okay with taking the hit and shutting it down, but this proposal answers only one side of it, a huge mistake, imo.

The green new deal thing might be more rhetoric than anything else. If we can spur investment in a way that produces as yet unknown sustainable technologies, sure, give it a shot. Govt mandates on emissions have done a great job, causing incredible innovation in engine efficiency, to the degree that you really can't blame cars anymore. LA actually has clean air now.

So, on most of those proposals I'm more okay with them than I am with the headlines, but they do seem to address only one side of the situation, long on Kumbaya, short on site prep.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

The biggest issue I have with your list is not so much the

Jul 9, 2020, 2:31 PM

yes/no, but the difference in wording between your list and the actual proposals. I suspect we are not far apart if we were talking face to face, but in print what I notice are things like:

"Investments in housing, infrastructure, SS". Some of that is investment, some is not. What govt can stimulate, and what it should provide, are of course different questions.

"Repeal anti Muslim travel ban". To discuss that, wording should reflect what is actually being banned. I personally know Muslims who come and go. It is a ban from some countries. It has to be discussed on that basis.

But yes, on most of those we likely agree, and even on the above if we reach agreement on wording.

The anti-Muslim one is all me. The rest are C&P from Foxnews***

More to your points

Jul 9, 2020, 3:57 PM [ in reply to The biggest issue I have with your list is not so much the ]

(I was stuck doing work stuff and couldn't respond before)

I agree with all your points, especially on the "investments" because I have no idea what they even are. I'm going 100% by the news article.

And yes, agreed on the Muslim ban. I mean travel ban.

Looks like it'd cost a lot of money

Jul 9, 2020, 2:37 PM

is my main observation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right. I don't know how many others feel this way, but

Jul 9, 2020, 2:43 PM

if we get the budget balanced within a tax load that is about what it is today, and we keep the free market operating as an actual free market, I don't get too invested in the other proposals. Hot button issues remain, but most of those should be handled locally anyway.

I looked quickly, but did not see a direct link.

I love Fox News, but if I'm going to take the time to read it, I want it from the source...

I don't see how Biden would consider listening to much

Jul 9, 2020, 5:28 PM

Bernie has to say. There's a reason why the Democratic party moved swiftly to ensure that Bernie wasn't the candidate, even though Biden is clearly not all there. Seems like a move that could backfire. Do they really think a lot Bernie supporters won't ultimately vote for Biden? Reading from a different source, Al Jazerra, seems like they more left folks aren't pushing Biden very hard yet. For example, leaving things out like Medicare for all so as not scare people that want to keep their company provided healthcare plans.

Regarding education, In the next stimulus package...

Trump should just add money for kids to pay smarter kids to take their SAT’s for them.

Problem solved.
