Clemson's lame apology for serving Mexican food

I expect some high quality trolling.

What was the issue with serving Mexican food?***

Wasn't so much about the food, I think...

Oct 9, 2015, 12:14 PM

as it was having workers wearing sombreros, and things like that. The complainer(s) felt their culture was being stereotyped by caricatures.

It's pretty ridiculous

Oct 9, 2015, 12:23 PM

Of course any particular example of a different culture's way of dressing, or of their cuisine, or of their music is going to be stereotypical and "flat" (to borrow the terminology from Clemson's official apology). But you can't represent an entire culture, and you shouldn't try to.

I also have no idea why these people feel like it's mocking Mexican culture for people to wear sombreros and listen to mariachi music. It would've been mocking Mexican culture if there were a bunch of people in cowboy boots jumping over a fence getting shot at by drug lords while eating churros.

I think what would have helped is if they had both.

Oct 9, 2015, 12:25 PM

Like if they had some workers happy with sombreros and some workers pretending to smuggle drugs and wearing fake AK-47s. Then the cultural representation would not have been as flat.

Like this?

Clemson's official statement should have been "If you're offended, you can go suck a bag of #####. Thanks."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They can't serve Mexican food now?

Oct 9, 2015, 11:58 AM

Or are we not supposed to separate the Messicans by categorizing their food as "Mexican"? Is that now considered being "non inclusive"?

Q: if Mariachi bands performing around Mexican food is wrong

Oct 9, 2015, 12:41 PM

and considered demeaning or stereotypical, under what other circumstance would a Mariachi band ever be hired to perform?

They wouldn't make the cut at a Greek Festival. Nor would they be booked at a Mongolian barbecue. What about a Cajun crawfish boil? I would say not.

They may as well cease being.

Clemson should only offer real degrees.
