Large part of downtown Clemson becoming a Marriott?
Jul 29, 2018, 1:10 PM

According to the waitress at Brioso, the part of downtown that is Mr knickerbockers, Brioso etc is going to be shut down to expand the road and then become a Marriott with a fancy restaurant?
Does anyone actually think that is a good idea?

So you are asking us to speculate on a rumor based on the assumption that it is true without a single factual detail?
I am all for it althought I really don’t care either way

But speculating on a rumor based on an assumption without a single factual detail is what TNetters do best!

No!
Not anti-progress by any means, but the charm of being the sleepy little Southern college town would be gone forever. I watched the chapel hill area go through the same development angst 30-40 years ago.
Hard to believe the same town council that fought so hard (successfully) against Wal-Mart moving inside the city limits would ever agree to this.

And after those insiders invested so much into the Abernathy, and the Lakeside Lodge guys are cranking up to take advantage of the dearth of hotel rooms, along comes Marriott?? Aaarrrgh!

I think the hanging point on the Target is still if they'll agree to an ORANGE bullseye logo . I mean , do you wanna sell stuff in Clemson or not ?

A downtown hotel makes a lot of sense.

It is needed. It will sell out regularly. As long as it fits in architecturally, I don’t see the problem.
Then again, I am not delusional enough to think that downtown Clemson will always look the same for the rest of eternity.

Hotels need to be restricted to Hwy 123, imo. Possibly one on Hwy 76 past the bridge that is Hwy 93.

I haven't heard this particular rumor. in fact, I haven't

heard anything about what is going there. While Mr Knickerbockers was "pushed out", it was my understanding that Brioso chose to leave because of lack of parking.
As far as hotels go, we already have one newish one (The Abernathy) on Hwy 93 across from Lot1 and a new Hilton brand going in at Hartwell Village (technically Oconee County). Plus, they just NIXED the idea for a hotel further down on College Ave. However, it wouldn't surprise me if Clemson okay'd this. but the part of this rumor doesn't make the least sense is the expanding the road part. how the hell would they do that?
