I heard on the broadcast Saturday of the game:
Jan 8, 2018, 1:04 PM
|
|
"You don't want to send these guys [meaning us] to the free throw line if you are behind - because you won't gain any ground unless you hit a 3" . . . .
The Eagles got back together & now this ? ? ?
Hope ol' BeezyBub has a puffy jacket down there to keep him warm.

I've heard so many people comment about this which makes

me wonder how many have really been following our program at all. We've been over 72% from the line 4 of the last 5 years. The only exception was 4 seasons ago at 68%. Brownell has taken some shaky FT shooters and made them much better. Now he's gotten a couple the last couple of years that were good from the start, but this really hasn't been a huge overall problem. Yes, we missed some critical ones last year I'm sure in the close games but in-bounding the basketball and TOs in critical situations has been the nemesis of BBs teams more so than FT shooting.

I've been following our basketball since 1970 or so . . .

and along the way there have been a couple of 2 to 4 year stretches of reasonable FT shooting . . . and I realized we are in such a stretch right now (that hopefully lasts for the next 40 years) . . .
But to hear an ACC broadcast say that with such certainty . . . I'm pretty sure I have never heard anything said that is even remotely similar to that.
My observation was about the statement - not about the validity of the statement.
Irregardless . . . it landblasted my head.

We had some horrendous free throw shooting under Purnell.

2003-2004: .631 (305th nationally) 2004-2005: .601 (324th nationally) 2005-2006: .617 (324th nationally) 2006-2007: .578 (335th nationally) 2007-2008: .623 (322nd nationally) 2008-2009: .688 (178th nationally) 2009-2010: .661 (267th nationally)
Purnell's best Clemson team finished 178th nationally. The second best was 267th, and the other five years we were below 300.
Free throw shooting has improved considerably under Brownell: 2010-2011: .701 (137th nationally) 2011-2012: .670 (247th nationally) 2012-2013: .654 (290th nationally) 2013-2014: .744 (30th nationally) 2014-2015: .682 (220th nationally) 2015-2016: .723 (82nd nationally) 2016-2017: .731 (86th nationally) 2017-2018: .756 (36th nationally)
Our worst year under Brownell was 290th. Four of Brownell's teams have finished in the top 100 in free throw percentage. This year is shaping up to be our best.

I believe the sentiment of us not being a good free throw shooting team is that we haven't had a good team that also shot free throws well. It is not that us fans haven't been paying attention. I know we have been better over the past few years than we have been traditionally, as it is noted in this thread. However, our best teams have never shot free throws well, not in my lifetime. I can't remember any of Elliss', Barnes', Shyatt's, or Purnell's teams being able to constantly put games away (protect our lead) at the line and I was too young to know what was going on when Foster was out coach. No matter how good our teams where I always feared the final 3 - 5 minutes of any competitive game.
Having said that; this is the first year that we have hit a higher percentage than 3 out of 4 and it isn't just situation of who is on the line. For the most part all of our guys are knocking them down.

Our overall FT percentage last year was okay, but we weren’t

“clutch” when we needed to be.
We would shoot FTs well early and then freeze up at the line when it counted.
Our best player Blossomgame became a liability at the FT line late in games last year.
Gabe Defoe who is great this year was about 60% Last year.

starters' FT stats are great
Jan 8, 2018, 2:09 PM
|
|
Marcquise Reed .843 Donte Grantham .795 Shelton Mitchell .823 Gabe DeVoe .800 Elijah Thomas .667 and he was 4-5 against BC and 2-2 vs NCSU (only player on the team not to attempt a 3 this season - which is a good thing )
