Is Amtrak the Belton of traveling?

Feb 12, 2019, 10:12 AM

Wife of wants to take the kids on a train this Summer during my 15 years of vacation.

Looking at a 30 minute train ride on Amtrak for $40 for 4 people.

Out of 4, how many of us will end up with a heroin addiction on the trip?

Probably only you and your wife.

Feb 12, 2019, 10:15 AM

It's not that bad, actually

Feb 12, 2019, 10:15 AM

the most annoying thing to me, was getting used to the train swaying back and forth

$120 each for a 20 hour ride to Clemson from Charleston. I wonder how much an Uber would be?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I took it to DC and Baltimore when I lived in Richmond.

Feb 12, 2019, 10:17 AM

I would pay a little extra for 1st class. Much easier than driving. Cost about $45-60 RT.

I grew up in a family that loves the water, because seeing what the rest of y'all do on your typical summer days off is depressing AF.

Wait till weeks b4 Christmas. Go to Winnsboro.

Feb 12, 2019, 10:35 AM

Ride the Santa Train at the SC Railroad Museum. Older train, and it takes about an hour. Kids get to ride a real old fashion train, see Santa, sing Christmas songs, drink hot chocolate, and your wife may "thank" you. Or not as in my case.

Lunge answer -
Do you really want your kids around when they drive a train on your wife?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is this a knock on McLovin's current place of residence?

Feb 12, 2019, 10:40 AM

Wife and kids took it from Savannah to Florida and....

Feb 12, 2019, 10:43 AM

back a couple of years ago and they liked it.

Son-of loves trains, so he got a kick out of it, but was pretty cost-effective and in-laws picked them up at the station in Florida. Said they had wi-fi the whole way and the food/drink options weren't too bad.

Taken Amtrak 4 times in my life:

Feb 12, 2019, 10:45 AM

1. Junior year in HS to DC and back with govt. class. We hooked up with Syracuse students who had alcohol on their way to spring break, good times.
2. From Northern Ca. to San Diego when in USAF. AC went out.
3. From DC to Columbia, much hard drinking. Something caused long delays, don’t remember what.
4. With wife and daughter about 15 years ago, Ft. Lauderdale to Columbia. Track damaged. Delay of several hours.

Taken trains in Europe many many times. Never a long delay.

Its only a 20 hour ride from CHS to Clemson.

Feb 12, 2019, 10:58 AM

Can't beat that!

Unless you're on a bicycle

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Been to NO and back on Amtrack twice

Feb 12, 2019, 11:07 AM [ in reply to Taken Amtrak 4 times in my life: ]

The ride was great, Worst part was making out of the NO train station to the cab stand alive

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We've done AMTRAK in the past, but not in a long time.

Honeymoon with a sleeper car from Charlotte to New Orleans was EXCELLENT. Left around midnight and got there in around 13-14 hours of sex/sleep/sex/sleep/sex/sleep/sex/sleep. It's around a 12 hours if you drive straight through.

Took the train to Washington DC a couple of times when Mrs. Tig was there working on her master thesis. With 6 year old Joonyer, it was a great way to go. He could run up and down the aisles, play with toys, annoy others...and I could sit and read or sleep, or go to the bar car and imbibe.

Took the train from Charlotte to NYC once with 7 or 8 year old Joonyer, same as above.

There were deals to be had in those days, but once we started seeing the train rates approach airline rates, I quit looking.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I sweater gawd, I checked on train rates one day and I could

Feb 12, 2019, 11:11 AM

fly to wherever I was looking for less. It MAY have been to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowel last year.
