and kick.

Kicking would put you within 12. Easily manageable with the amount of time left in the game and gets a least SOME momentum back your way.

Instead you run a fake against a prevent defense with your kicker lead blocking. Even if you get a 1st down there's no telling if you will score. Which puts you still at a 3 possession game.

That kicker was ripe to be destroyed as a blocker, and Wilken's just side steps him. Senior discipline right there.
