Playing Alabama in Bham is not neutral. Maybe it isn't

the official stadium of the Tide, but Bham is crawling with Bama fans, seeing as how it is Bama.

The Alabama game will mark the first time Clemson has opened the season with a neutral site game since 1904 when Clemson defeated Alabama 18-0 in Birmingham

it was 1904... and indeed a neutral site....

those types of games happened all the time back then and later into the 1950s and 60s. Games like the Tobacco Bowl in Norfolk and the games in Charlotte against Wake and other teams.
Sort of like the HBCU classics at a neutral site now.
Totally different than a game at Legion Field would be now.

If it is in a city in the same state as one of the teams, it

really isn't a neutral site. Sure it was in 1904, but Birmingham has been one of Bama's largest cities for a while now, and is crawling with Bama fans, and has been for ages.
The Georgia Dome is not officially UGA or Ga Tech's stadium, but if we were to play either there, it really wouldn't be truly neutral.

but technically it is.. neutrals count the same as away

for RPI in hoops, I would assume it's similar for football power rating.
Anytime a game isn't on a team's home field, it's neutral.

ok, technically yes. It isn't Clemson's stadium or Bama's

stadium, but I would be willing to bet that there were many more Bama fans there, mainly because of the proximity. And the almost central location of Bham within the state, makes it easy for Bama fans that live in AL to get there.
Bama is the flagship university of the state of Alabama, so really and truly it isn't 100 percent neutral.

It's as simple as this...

[ in reply to ok, technically yes. It isn't Clemson's stadium or Bama's ] |

... There were no interstates in 1904. As a matter of fact, a lot of people still got around on horseback. Birmingham's population was about 50,000. My point is that football then wasn't even in the same himisphere as it is today. Playing at home back then was neutral compared to today's standards. Stop trying to grossly over analyze something that happened 104 years ago! Stick to grossly over analyzing whether or not Tommy Bowden should make what he makes, or wear his hair how he does!
