I remember LB play for years that was stellar

Sep 23, 2012, 6:46 PM

All conf, All American, solid NFL careers. It seemed in those days it would never end. But clearly it has. We may run a slightly different scheme or something but our linebackers are not a major factor in coverage, blitzing, or against the run. I like our kids and I'm sure they are trying but they just aren't having a defensive impact

Yeah, can remember some referring to us as....

"linebacker U" because of that - hopefully we'll strengthen our defense quickly the way we have the offense - we've got to get back to those days.

Those LB's of old had dominant D lines in front of them

occupying the O line.

it all began with Vic Koenning, once we switched to that

all soft zone coverage we missed on alot of LB's at the time that had quotes about not wanting to play zone for four years. So we ended up trending toward recruiting the slim fast guys that could cover the zone. And since then we haven't had any guys play here to create a buzz about Clemson LB's being trendy, like our RB's and WR's have become in recent years. I was hoping this Anthony Steward class would soon buck the trend but it's hard to tell at this point. Hopefully the light turns on they'll get it but it doesn't help to fill that need only. We got alot of holes at this point.

No pressure
Poor cover skills
Out of position
Can't physically get off blocks
Gap control is porous
Lack of adequate depth=tired defense at end of tough games.
No one is fast enough to recover after mistakes

Need I go on, i'm sure there is more but i'm tearing up over here.

Loved the '03 corp w/ Leake, LeRoy, Sampson, and Waters.

LeRoy (still one of my all-time favorite Tigers) racked up over 25 tackles for a loss that season.

That squad also had an explosive young secondary w/ Miller, Tye Hill, Fudge, and Pugh.

I'd love for us to have a defense like we had in 1981....

Sep 23, 2012, 7:14 PM

or 1989 - that's what we need!

Yeah

I can remember the announcers counting the number of orange jerseys around the ball throughout the game. The words swarming, dominant, relentless pusuit were used often.
