through my post history and TD'd all my posts, I'll try and be more aware of special needs people when I make backhanded remarks on message boards. Because, you know, when I say that word condescendingly I'm OBVIOUSLY making fun of special needs kids and not directing it at the intellectual inadequacies of the person I'm responding too. That's OBVIOUSLY what's happening, right?
I'll do you a favor and THINK OF THE CHILDREN going forward.

I've done some volunteer work with special needs kids over the past few years and this word also burns me. I think it's a bit different than the n-word as those who use that are intending to be as harmful as possible. I think using the r-word is more negligence a lot of times.
I think you touched upon some truths here: if you have someone close to you who is special needs or have close work with them, you see why the casual use of this word is bad.
And that goes for people who use "libtard" as well.

I think many people use the R word as well to be harmful. For example when you ask someone not to use it and explain why, yet they still continue to use it, it is harmful.
And special needs kids can't help it no more than black kids can help being black.
