Borrowing from something a friend wrote on the Facebox, it used to be that people who spouted crazy, outrageous stuff would be corrected pretty quickly by the sane people around them.
Now, the Internet and social media allows them to find like-minded crazies, thus they believe their views are validated. Like people who are QAnon or Deep State conspiracy theorists.
