How hard is it to beat a rival by 40+ points?

Nov 27, 2016, 12:43 PM

I looked at some of the other traditional rivalries for the type of margins we saw in last night's game. It is really hard to beat your rival by more than 40.

Alabama's only done it once to Auburn, in 2012.

Georgia's only beaten Tech by 40 once, in 2002.

Ohio State has never beaten Michigan by more than 40. Michigan has done it 4 times to Ohio State, but none since 1946.

Florida State has never beaten the Gators by more than 40. Florida has done it once to FSU, in 1973.

Texas has only done it twice to A&M.

I realize this probably says more about the Gamecocks than it does about us, but we've now done it 5 times: 2016 (49), 2003 (46), 1989 (45), 1935 (44), 1900 (51).

We made it look pretty easy last night!! Could have won by 60 if Dabo would've allowed it! Lol

True, wasn't the practice D-Line in the 4th quarter? Every player got to play last night. If Dabo were the bad sport the kook fans claim he is we would have won by 70 pts or more. Give back the 2 TDs taken off the board and it would have been 54 pts last night. Even with all the backups in.

Apples and oranges. We're talking the Coots.

What's the worst blowout by the Harlem Globetrotters vs the Generals? That's a better comparison.

I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created, and with them the animals,
The birds and the creatures that move along the ground, for I regret that I have made them.

what's the worst they ever beat us?

Nov 27, 2016, 12:53 PM

56-21 right?

Right, 56-20 in 1975.

That's the only game in which they have scored more than 40 against Clemson.

And, holy crap, I just looked at this stat--they've scored in the single digits against us 45 times (including 22 shutouts). FORTY FIVE games they have not cracked double digits.

Nice post, but I can only give you a grade of 49(56-7).You left out one important piece of information.
You see Alabama has won numerous National Championships. So has Auburn,Ohio State,
Florida,Florida State and Texas.
Furthermore even though UGA has only one,Tech shared one and Michigan has done so as well.In fact even A&M won a title way back before most of us were born.
But the Gamecoots have never even once played for it.
So how can you really call it a rivalry when the only thing your rivalry can show for it is a conference title back in 1969?

(Of course you know I am only doing this in jest, but did you know that the coots are the only
school in the history of the NCAA that has had three head coaches that won National Championships at other schools, but couldn't even bring a conference championship to Cootlumbia.
Those coaches would be Paul Dietzel,Lou Holtz, and Steve Spurrier.

Excellent points, my comparison is not really fair to the Gamecocks. Help me think of a more analogous rivalry.

Iowa's only done it three times to Iowa State.

Washington has only done it four times to Washington State.

Oregon's only done it three times to Oregon State.

Ole Miss has done it four times to Mississippi State.

And for the first 60 years it was always played down there.***
