How does JC Chalk stack up as Garrett Williams replacement?

Aug 1, 2019, 8:54 AM

Anyone here feel like they know?

On the surface they appear to be very similar players with many of the same skill sets.

Chalk is a bit bigger than Williams.

Williams certainly served a vital, but largely unheralded role last season.

What’s the consensus on Chalk?

Has he got what it takes to replace Garrett Williams?

This position is always tougher to make an impact from that we all imagine. Chalk has grown up around the game I suspect an its not his first year so I think he will be fine

Williams was more athletic and skilled blocker in our scheme.

Blocking will probably be the most important thing for Chalk. Almost don't even care if he doesn't catch one pass.

From day 1 Garrett Williams had a nasty streak and physicality that stuck out. He’s just a football player and worked his way on the field early. Chalk has been slower to progress and has never had the sort of buzz from coaches. I think he certainly has ability and potential, but not having Williams (and no Galloway either) is a big blow to the position.

Not expecting much from Chalk

Would guess they all but scrap the position for the regular season and try to bring Lay along slowly and then get Galloway back for the playoff and have him emerge as a weapon.

If Chalk is in you’d expect a run or quick pass. Could work in the offense just because of all the other talent but the TE position will likely be forgotten about unless Lay made huge strides over the summer.

Last season Chalk had 2 receptions for 21 yds. One incompletion I recall was into the endzone. The ball wasn't in the best spot over his shoulder, but thought a reasonably athletic TE could've made the play. As far as a receiving threat, think his best opportunity will be on short routes. Unless he's improved a good bit, likely his best use will be as a blocker.
