How a 4 team playoff would have looked the last 14 Years.

Repost for the morning Crowd
This is some research I did on the "Delaney Plan". The Big Ten Commissioner proposed a plan were the top 4 Conference Champions would be included in a 4 Team Playoff. All teams must be in the top six. if there are not 4 Conference Champions in the the top 6 then the highest At Large teams will be taken to fill out the field. Here is how his proposed plan might have looked the past 14 years. (don't be afraid to point a man for his hard work. lol)
NCAA Playoffs by Year 1998-2011 (Hypothetical Under Delaney’s plan) Conference Champions in the top 6. Filled with an at large. *For the purposes of this Graph, the at large will receive the lowest seed. *BCS Ranking of teams pre-bowl season is used
1981 – (Just for Fun) 1.Clemson ACC 4.Penn State At Large
2. Alabama SEC 3. Pittsburgh At Large
1998 1.Florida St ACC 4.Texas A&M Big 12
2.Tennessee SEC 3. UCLA PAC 10
1999 1.Florida State ACC 4.Alabama SEC
2.Virginia Tech Big East 3.Nebraska Big 12
2000 1.Oklahoma Big 12 4.Washington Pac 10
2.Florida State ACC 3.Miami Big East
2001 1.Miami Big East 4. Tennessee SEC
2.Colorado Big 12 3.Oregon PAC 10
2002 1.Miami Big East 4.Washingtom State Pac 10
2.Ohio State Big 10 3. Georgia SEC
2003 1.LSU SEC 4.Oklahoma at Large
2.USC Pac10 3.Michigan Big 10 #- these games were actually played. The winners would have produced the Championship game most people believed should have been played.
2004 1.USC Pac10 4.Utah Mountain West
2.Okalahoma Big 12 3.Auburn SEC #- in this playoff scenario Utah enters a scenario in which a no BCS Conference team has a shot at the title instead of just a crappy fiesta bowl against pitt.
2005 1.USC Pac 10 4.Ohio State at Large
2.Texas Big 12 3. Penn State Big 10
2006 1.Ohio State Big 10 4.Louisville Big East
2.Florida SEC 3.USC Pac 10
2007 1.Ohio State Big 10 4. Oklahoma Big 12
2.LSU SEC 3. Virginia Tech ACC
2008 1.Oklahoma Big 12 4.Utah Mountain West
2.Florida SEC 3.USC Pac 10
2009 1.Alabama SEC 4.TCU Mountain West
2.Texas Big 12 3.Cinncinati Big East
2010 1.Auburn SEC 4.Wisconson Big 10
2.Oregon Pac 10 3.TCU Mountain West
2011 1.LSU SEC 4. Alabama At Large
2.Oklahoma State Big 12 3.Oregon Pac 12 #-There is a rematch but it doesn’t stop there.
Notes: Only 3 non-conference champions have a chance at the title the entire span of the BCS era. (2003 Oklahoma, 2005 Ohio State, 2011 Alabama).
#- Playoff Appearances by Conference ( at the time of entry) ACC - 4 Big Ten - 7 Big East -6 (2 by current Big East Teams) Big 12 -11 SEC –13 Mountain West- 4 (0 by current MWC teams) PAC 12-11
#-Noticeably Absent – Boise State
#-Opportunities for an all conference Championship Game – 1 in 2005 ( Ohio State, Penn State)

would likely get a Top 6 Conference Champion treatment if it finished that high as part of this structure, which I wouldn't have any problem with. It ensures only the highest quality teams that have earned the right throughout the regular season, with "tie breakers" in a way given to league champions over non-league champions. It doesn't cap the number of teams from any one conference, but it does help err on the side of variety by allowing for an advantage to a league champion.
Those games would make for excellent New Year's Day viewing without a doubt.

not exactly sure what your saying. but ill guess
the reason Bama is listed as the 4 seed. is because they are the at large team which gets the lower seed in this model.

Why Bama in 81, not UGA?
May 8, 2012, 10:41 AM

It seems like they were co-champs of SEC and UGA was #2 before bowls where they both lost. Not that important but I remember they were pulling hard for Nebraska because if they beat Pitt and we lost they would have been #1.

If you see any errors in the BCS portion let me know I'm going to try to get to some news people. I triple checked the BCS part though. the 1981 part was just for fun. Here is the corrected version.

Could you put the actual ranking beside the seed. Would help understand how far they moved.

can't help but keep thinking we've been robbed. True semi-finals featuring the best qualified teams in what would have been riveting and memorable contests. I don't recognize any eventual national champion being missing from any of the seeds over those years, but I do recognize a number of teams that were robbed of the opportunity to challenge through voting.
Semi-finals, in most sports worldwide, feature the best games and matches of the whole season - this is going to be a huge improvement over what we have now, and college football will be the better for it.
Each year there will be two or three conference championship games impacting who makes the 4. Those quarterfinal events will bring greater crowds as well because of it. And for ourselves, if we take care of business on the field and in the conference championship game we control our own destiny, regardless of what league we're playing in.
